vhf radio and course?? laymans terms please!!

i know u prob get these questions alot but its good to get a personalised answer, i live on the brisbane south side am looking at getting a vhf radio as i only have a 27 mg in my boat. looking in a catalouge i see there are some cheaper and dearer options, i know nothing about this, but i can gather i need a unit thats a vhf TRANSCEIVER is this correct?? there is a uniden MC5s5 for 200$ this would be a better price range also obviously i need an aerial and a mount for the aerial do these come with the units?? also a course location on the south side preferably weekends...................Can anyone please help as i undersatand the importance of getting this right as eventually i wanna fish offshore and dont want to purchase an incorrect unit or have a sales guy throw me into something i dont need!! any help would be great

For the course i would recommend the course run by member SUBZERO he really knows his stuff and runs an excellent professional easy to understand course

your biggest choice with vhf is whether or not to get the DSC (Digital Selective Calling) model or the plain model which is cheaper.

do the radio course and you will be able to make your own mind up about this because everyone has a different opinion.

look around at what you can get for what prices mate. your standard antenna mount will come with the antenna.
get as tall an antenna as possible - i think its about 2.4m.
as for which radios are better, well thats hard to say and I can't help you there. it really all comes down to features I guess for what money you can afford to spend - otherwise they all should perform the same function at a base level.

just be aware that the radio course will teach you how to use any radio and will not give you any further assistance on choosing a brand or model.
