Re: Is there plans for another protest/rally against closures

Well Andy, we are doing our best to put pressure on those that count.

As you know, the submissions have closed, so for now we are concentrating our efforts on the EPA, MLA's, and getting as much media publicity as possible.

The good thing that happened was Campbell Newman winning a majority in the council elections. He is very supportive of our endeavours.

Certainly another rally to show our strength is not out of the question.

We have come to the conclusion that there is a great need for public education on this matter.

Certain media outlets are very supportive of the need to educate people about the proposals, but those media already have a ' converted ' audience. The Green ( courier ) mail is an outlet that has to be conquered. Not an easy task given it's Green Agenda.

If you have a spare couple of hundred grand, we could use it right now to put together our media campaign.

SOBA inc will have another meeting very soon to chart our course and take stock.

I am still spreading the message, again last week in the Quest Northern Times I have attempted to educate the reader, it was published albeit highly edited, but I still got our message through, I reckon the next protest with any substance will have to be after the September announcement, we need to rally the troops to have a substancial show of numbers.
Maybe Woody Point reefs, Bramble Bay, Tripcony Bight, Shornecliffe, we have heap of sights to pick from, the EPA has made that bit easy.

    Hi all,

Another protest rally - another two is the go. The first though needs to include many more people than we have had attend the other two and the focus needs to be more on the environment (pollution & airport) than purely fishing. The second rally will be closer to the September time frame just prior to the legislation coming through.

    HOWEVER
    1. unless we get commitment from more than the normal 100 that turn up, don't bother.

    2. unless we can be united together and piss off this bickering about which political party this is about, or which it is with etc, don't bother.

    3. unless you are willing to give this 150% to SOBA and what we are doing, don't bother.

Commitment, not apathy is needed. Funding and support not complaining is needed. You have to support the guys that work their ass off to make these things happen. Get involved.

I think you get the message.

I dont THINK slagging off like that gets alot of support personally Chris , personally it has turned me away from being involved, pretty much for the same reasons Dr is!I am committed with my opinion about trying to get Jo Blo to understand the stupidity behind the closures and yes The airport and dredging should be what we are throwing back to the exstrem greens of this world.
    My thoughts anyway.

Yes DR, I will admit I was wrong and I do apologise for it to you, and to anyone else on here.

Unfortunately it took a death in my family a week or so ago for a few things to gel.

Re: Is there plans for another protest/rally against closures

Sandman, I was not putting that up as a slanging thing so sorry if it was interpreted that way. I put in that way because unless those on the fringe can commit wholly to it, then it won't work. It was not directed to those that are doing these things already.

I could have written it differently I agree.

Maybe it is time for someone else to carry on the fight to the next stage?

Re: Is there plans for another protest/rally against closures

i dont think people dont care its just that they dont know whats happening and to what extent it will affect their lives, i think the key to a good protest is publicity. most people, even on the site, probably never heard about the rally. for example in the fishing monthly all the authors talk about fighting the closures but there was not one word about a rally, surely they would commit some space to help publicise an organised protest. I guess in the end it depends on how big the budget is so you can reach the masses?

Ring these people and ask them what they know about dredging up millions of tons of Moreton Bay seagrass’s and using it as landfill for a new airport runway that the EPA have approved.

Ask them where to find independent scientific evidence that the Moreton Bay fishery is in decline.

Ask them why Green preference votes are more important than taking your kids fishing on the bay.

Ask them why the EPA are not green zoning the Brisbane River.

Ask them why the EPA are closing down the fishing access to the bay instead of trying to reduce the real killer, pollution.

    I will be listening………………..
