G'day
Lever all the way as well. Easier to max out at a pre-determined setting, without a fear of overdoing it

I'm very new to overheads and fishing in general so may be missing something, but after using a lever drag reel I will never look at a star again, for any type of fishing.
I also look for leaver drag in a reel because it is just so god damed conveinient,
also you can fish with a lighter drag than usual without fear of pulling hooks, but
if you need to give it some curry , you know u wont over drag
cheers,
jamie
Ahhhhh, To be young and Free
yeah. go lever drag.
set the line so you can pull the fish off the bottom and have trust it's not going to snap. and have the advantage of backing it off slightly if you do get a palagic.
Yeah lever all the way. Always easy to see where you had it set and quicker to adjust when you really need to.
Cheers
Kezza

you wonder why they still make star drag
the one small advantge of a star drag is, if for some reason you want to apply max drag and do not want your thumb burnt off, then a start drag will allow this, whereas a lever needs to be backed off and "reset" to achieve more drag than the lever travel will allow, not too sure if it is a valid reason though!
This is an excellent point you make, Noelm.
Levers were originally developed for use as top or mid water gamefish reels.
For this you need a smooth drag that will not heat up, rather than a high drag weight.
Manufacturers are producing levers now, targeted at bottom fishing and jigging,
like Shimanos Torsa with it`s range of specialist cams., and the new Penn Torque.
I think there will always be those who like the simplicity of the star drag reel.
I find them easier to service.

Star drag for me,Levers don't handle high drag setings very well at all even your top line reels like Torsa,Accurate and Tiburon will suffer from binding or/and loss of freespool when the anti is raised.
Have to admit to not seeing the lever version of the Torque yet,any links?
