Leader vs mono
OK so this is probably a dumb question but is purpose made leader really that much better than just using regular mono?.
If so, what are the advantages and what is a reasonably priced good brand?

Re: Leader vs mono
Hey
I used to use a general mono as a leader but now only use penn 10X on all my gear. I think its excellent, very abrasion resistant, i get it rubbed on coral and mangroves all the time and havent had it bust yet.
And its even on a handy closed in spool, makes it easy in the takle bag. Anything designd just to be a leader has to be better than something thats designed to just be main line.

Mate schnider 55lb klear line is hard to beat very abrasion resistant with good knot strength.I've tried jinkai, penn, black majic and a few other's and schnieder is better and far cheaper.
Dan..
(ps i use 20lb fireline and have never had a problem in over 12 years)

Re: Leader vs mono
fluorocarbon leader material is better for soft plastics and diving lures because it sinks and is more transparent due to a rounder circumferance. i only use mono as a leader material when i am using topwater lures such as towadi's because it will not sink and affect the lures action. i hope it helps.

Re: Leader vs mono
Never really thought about it before but its ot like theres many small spools of 100lb mono that you can go out and buy just to use as leader so I always go for the black magic.

Re: Leader vs mono
Scott, Penn10X is good stuff. Its the only leader i use, and i dare say I would use it in the same conditions you do, on Barra, jacks, reefies etc, never had a bust off (only bite offs from sharks, but get a big enough one and they'll bite through bloody wire) on it and pulled plenty of fish through the sticks, rocks and coral. Also a lot cheaper than many brands, its great value for money IMO.
Cheers
