    Barra Very Quiet @ Monduran

Just spent a few days @ Monduran dam for some R&R .
I pretty much had a fair idea it would be tough going due to recent happenings on the dam.
Now being a sucker for knowledge i thought it best to check it out and not take the easy way out by fishing something easier. Anyway i'll cut to the chase..... Spent 20 plus hours fishing for 2 Barra landed out of 3 hook ups, also had to deal with about 9 or so Catfish as well. One Barra came via fishing a Evergreen ES-Flat basically just dead sticking it over some structure that held a few fish in 15' of water, while the other fell to a 6” Mr Twister curl tail fished unweighted with a 7/0 worm hook on a medium retrieve in less than 2 feet. And the one jump off came via a 4” Rattle Trap jigged @ 20 feet in 50 plus foot of water.
Most of the catties came via 110 Slick Rigs on the shores that the waves were crashing into. Not a lot of fish getting caught at the moment and the most common reply from anglers was nothing for several days fishing or the odd boat got 1 or 2 after 40 hrs combined casting.
Casting softy's in the shallows paid off for a few but only after hrs of casting practice. A lot of boats trolling for little or no reward as well. Lots of comments on water temperature being the problem but i don't think it's an issue IMO.
The big problem at the moment is lower than normal dissolved oxygen levels over most parts of the dam due to flooded ground vegetation being broken down by bacterial decomposition etc.
Until this process is mostly completed the fishing is going to be very indifferent and challenging indeed. If it wasn't for the very windy conditions the fishing would have been even worse off.
Bugger all bait fish to be found near the surface and the hundreds of thousands of cormorants that usually black out the sky have taken off somewhere else to find a feed.

So if your heading to Monduran in the near future then the fishing is most likely going to be challenging.

    Cheers Les

Was nice to meet you up there Les.

Ian and myself ended up with a big fat zero after 2 days (about 14 hrs casting) so you did well to get a couple!

Found some fairly warm water (compared to last trip a few weeks ago) around 28 deg, and agree with you that the oxygenation is probably the biggest issue at the moment. We figured that would be the case but decided to go up anyway as fortune favours the bold (sometimes)

Also caught up with Trevor (mylestom) and Chris (Nagg) up there so there was a good sampling of ausfishers up there!

I'll be back up there in a few weeks and hopefully conditions will have changed for the better, would suck to get two donuts in a row!

    Cheers
    Tony

Thanks for the report and the information it contained Les. Good work on the two you did get. Any idea's anyone on how long it takes for the decomposing and oxygen issues to stabilise? I dont know much about this sort of stuff and we are heading up there in early April. - cheers Richard. -

Good to see you back ere' Les! Hows the Boat goin?

Very much the same up here at Tinaroo the last week... very hard going. Weed and grass is rotting as you said and the Barra are a bit deeper then usual in quite featureless water. Its very dirty up here (imagine it would be down there too!) so it could be a few days yet until they are back up and feeding strongly.

Les, thats a pretty good effort considering some of the stories!

Good to see fish caught on a variety of methods! Although it would sting the hip pocket if you got bricked using the ES Flat!!!! They aint cheap!! I have had a close look at them. I reckon they should be awesome for winter in the shalllows.

    cheers steve

Tuff trip mate, thanks for the report, current conditions might slow down the harvesting of the basin fish over the full moon/long week end comeing up

The breakdown of the vegitation especially in Bay B seems to be on the improve.

Lots of bait fish on the sounder and some fish working the surface. Fished their this morning for a good fish to finally lose her at the boat side.

Guess her idea of catch n release was a little different from mine.

Mostly catching a fish in the early morning.

Althought a couple of the Boys from Urunga, Merv (Rebel one) and his crew got a couple around 90cm yesterday about 11am.

I (C & R) a 1005 at about 7.30 am yesterday, but a bit slow with the chop and the back op, so limited to a little bit of fishing each day. Anyway just great to be on the water.

    Regards
