Does anyone know if there will be maps available for chart plotters outlining the green zones?
I am looking at buying one soon and would rather get one with the zones inbuilt if possible.
By the way isnt this green zone crap? Funny thing is the only thing that really has been impacted is whiting and mud crabs and that hasent really been addressed.

I spoke to the DPI&F about the same subject, If I don't have a chart plotter or GPS (which is not compulsory) how do I know if I have drifted into a green zone, his answer was very vague sujesting that most fisherman would take a three spot triangulation from land spots and they would know, I don't know if we are all that talented or how you do a three way Triangulation on the otherside of Moreton Island? I also asked if the EPA or the DPI&F would be supplying free GPS plotters once the new zones were inforced? the answer was no.
I also askedcthe DPI&F who be policing the green ones and how would they inforce the boundaries? They said there was nothing in their budget to have more personnell on the water to police such activities. The Zone will not be known for sometime, this year will be okay but I suspect once the EPA have gone trhough all the submissions and make some decision on the final draft it will be late next year, when the green zones will be L A W, so enjoy while you can.

They have to be in and ratified by September 2008 when the existing legislation will have lapsed.

Maybe while they work on their budgeting, they can include navigational courses. maps. compasses. gps's for those who don't have them. Then put them in a boat, take em for a spin and ask them to work out if there in a green zone??????????????? If they can't work it out for themselves, well I guess they will need to be fined too........

what a crock! Being able to navigate has nothing to do with knowing whether you are in a green zone or not. There are no lines on the water and 10m one way or the other could result in a big fine. Land marks aren't going to be very accurate when you might be 10-15 km from the nearest land. Furthher it is not reasonable to expect tinny owners to carry several large laminated charts with all the zones and explanations of all the applicable rules and regulations. Certainly the current maps do not have nearly enough detail to determine exactly where the boundaries are. The ONLY way to be sure will be with a mapping GPS.

Are you serious??!! - If you are - you need to to think about that statement a bit more.General sweeping staements like the above are not helpful.
The average Mum and Dad fisho doesn't need to be a navigational guru to take their kids out fishing in Moreton Bay - and nor should they have to be.
You are never that far away from land that you can't work out approximately where you are.
If you don't have a GPS on board even the best dead reckoning will not tell you if you are 100m in or out of a green zone.
That has nothing to do with being SAFE out on the water or not.
My 2 cents - If EPA want to have these green zones and want to enforce them - they need to mark them with bouys or whatever.
Either that or they need to make having a GPS mandatory. Otherwise I don't see how they can enforce the zones.

If they fine the crap out of you for being just inside a green zone like they do up in the GBRMP then people without GPS's will probably stay well away from green zones and those with GPS and plotters will probably back up to the fence and cast over it.
The confusion over boundaries up North has cost a lot of people a lot of money and given them criminal records to boot.
For ease of use and also policing they should keep it simple with few green zones with well defined boundaries, not exactly what I see in the draft plan unfortunately.

GPS points are not the be all or end all in actual position of where you are. There have been cases here and overseas, where a fairly large GPS manunfacture have clocked a 20 storey building doing 60MPH and a couple hundred of meters or so from where it actually is, so there you have it, I guess ther will be a grey zone in the enforcable green zone boundary where you will be shuu away and any further in you will be fined.
But to the peoples that knows me, I'm far from intelligent, and only a painted green line down the middle of the bay would only stop me from straying into these green zone.

I believe that a few people have already contested there fines and won on the grounds that the green zones are not clearly defined eg. bouys marking the boundarys. After all as has already been pointed out chart plotters are not compolsory. It seems to me that the goverrnment will a. have to bouy all the green zones or b. make the use of chart plotters compolsory.
As usual we have problems from rushed and poorly thought out legislation, what do we pay our leaders for??

Yes, it would be very nice to have the green zones marked on charts in shart plotters. I would buy that upgrade myself if it comes available.
The point I took exception to earlier was people who think that the authorities should provide "navigational courses, maps and compasses etc, etc" to everybody so that they can work out if they are in the green zones. People should already have means of manual navigation in their boat already - no exceptions and no excuses! Navigational courses are a good idea anyway.
Re triangulation for fixing a position, its very easily done with a hand held compass and a chart - this will be the first thing that will be done by the authorities if the think they have busted you out in the green zone. A GPS position will not hold up in court by itself, so they will triangulate the position and record it into their vessels log for evidence.
Your best protection if you get challenged on the water close to a green zone is to have a chart on the boat where you have already marked the green zone and a triangulation of your position, then you can argue quite successfully that you think you are in a legal place to fish. If you have the chart marked as such, they will in most liklihood, simply move you on rather than throw the book at you.
As far as knowing if you are 10 metres inside or outside the line, it is not in any way sensible to be fishing that close to a green zone boundary.
