Re: Are fish colour blind ?

guys thanks so much for your insight

So from what i can understand,

All fish have different levels in which they see colour - Variour species interperate colour in their own way.

If this is the case, then that might be why certain plastics/lures are so effective and some arent.

Maybe all the hype over the "nuke chook" for example is real....it may not be people talking it up. I have done my experiment and I "dont believe the hype".

What you would give to spend a day living like a fish !!! Just to fully understand how they percieve things.

    Cheers
    Joe

thanks Gecko, it got me thinking yes to see colour you need cone cells but you also need the necessary brain elements to have colour vision. but if you did not have the brain why would the cone cells be present.

i think your right in saying .
"The real answer is we cant impose human perceptions of color on fish or any animals. They see very well , just differently, and each species may even see a different range. Theres been a few uni studies done on this, but we need a lot more research yet." Gecko

i think it would be alot less than 90% and i believe it is. science is still divided on this subject. goldfish be have been behaviorally tested and yes they can see colour. but to test every species off fish would be crazy and to use large amounts of funding on such studies silly, although it would be fun and interesting.

talking about hype i don't think its going to be long before someone tries to cash in on the UV element, and bring out some new fish attractant spray with a UV element.

i know i would, if i had the abilities. even if it is hype with the right marketing. us fisho's me included would almost buy anything once to atleast try. thats alot of cash.

    Hi Horto,
its already out, its called 'Fool-a-Fish", a spray on formula with minute particles of foil that reflect UV light. Get it at most tackle shops.

It was while i was research on this product last year, that I found out all about some uni experiments on fish vision. I bought the stuff, and it hasnt worked at all. Might have something to do with me fishing at night tho...I think it needs daylight to work. Wanna buy a half used bottle?

    cheers

hey, yeah i think day light may help. i think i'll go look it up, but i don't think i'll be buying any. wouldn't sunscreen do the same job haha. not that i'm going to try it, always trying to keep the stuff off my hands.
