Thread: Brissy Jacks and Jewies.

    Brissy Jacks and Jewies.

Been at it lately with the Bullies in some small drains in the Brisbane River on unweighted or very lightly weighted Poddy Mullet. Been getting plenty up to around 90 odd cm on my Bass BC gear. Great fun and some awesome jumps. Plenty of by catch as well.

Caught a few decent Cod up to around 40cm and Flatties to 50. Couple of weeks back pulled a 71cm Jewfish which went like a train. All of these were caught on 100lb nylon coated wire.

Went for a fish down at the same spot today with a mate and got a few Prawns and Poddies in the cast net. We figured we might fish in close for Bream and maybe a Cod to begin with so I hadn't tied the wire to my 30lb Fluoro leader yet. Wacked on a Prawn and scored a Bream on a 6/0 Gamakatsu Octopus which was a bit surprising. Robbo followed it up with a dirty big Cattie foul hooked in the tail. Called it for a Jew as what felt like head kicks were crazy!

Finished with the Prawns and put on a small Mullet. I was drifting it past some mangroves when I was smashed. Line peeled off the Alphas and the fish screamed to the other side of the dirty drain. Wasn't sure what it was but it was a good fish. after 2 solid runs a 40cm Jack comes to the surface. What a surprise it was. Thinking I arsed that one I pitched a cast further along the bank only to get smashed and miss on another live Mullet. Robbo drops one in the same spot and gets busted then I put another Mullet back there only to have the rod nearly reefed from my hands. No need for a strike he hit it sweet as. Called it for another Jack as soon as it hit and up came a 41cm devil.

I was then busted off once more, as was Robbo both were suspected Jacks not even needing an inch of line before busting us. Robbo then missed 2 more fish one of which was a screamer 5 seconds after the Poddy entered the water.

Will be back there tomorrow after this success! 60lb leader is on the check list but.

That drain sounds like a fish tank, but I guess I know where you're fishing as that black mud is a tell tale giveaway..... nice fish and spot!

Top stuff from brisbane. Shows you dont have to go up or down to coast to catch jewwies or jacks.

Nice catch, you must have a full freezer to let that jewie go.

Great work mate.....Those bullies are awesome fun on the light gear.
    I love catching them.
Its interesting the by-catch you get when using wire.
I have had similar results in that you still get Jacks etc when using wire....?
They just cant help themselves when there is a fresh mullet in front of their noses.

Great effort mate, seems like your spot might not be fished all that often???

    Keep that one to yourself!

Thanks for the replies guys. Yeah I can't say it's an obvious looking spot and it defnately isn't fished by anyone else I've seen or heard of. Probably one of the last places you would think would hold either Jacks or Jewies. Only about 2.5m deep in a high tide around 2.5m. There's no water left by the time it reaches low.

Went back down Yesterday and I didn't get a hit except for Bream on live Prawns on the run in. After a little bit of run out got wasted by something speedy and snag orientated and then a couple more missed the hooks but no Jacks landed today.

I did get a 35cm Cod, 30cm Tailor, a dirty Catfish and 2 Bream. I'm confident it holds a few Jacks but. Went for a wander after it reached low and found another nice spot. Me and a mate manged 19 Bream to 33cm fork and 6 Flatties to 60cm on a mix of Evergreen Little Max, and Ecogear VX35 and VX40. I also got a couple of Bream on an SX48 to begin with. The 33cm Bream was almost eaten by a bloody 3 foot Bullie!

baitwaster: I'm not lugging a 71cm Jewfish for 20mins over my shoulder to the car!

Pistol_P: I only got the Jew on the wire. I had never fished the snags with livies, just the open for Bullies so I figgured any fish that likes snags probably won't hit wire so I had 30lb Fluoro on. The way they hit is like no other.
