Thread: We are all Wooses

    We are all Wooses

I just read the editorial by Stephen Booth in this months Qld. Fishing Monthly. It really got my mind racing on what we could achieve as a group if we were really organised.

Imagine literally thousands of anglers showing up at a pre-determined spot to fish in "NO Go Zones" just to show our strength.........now I'm not advocating anarchy but I am suggesting that we could get a lot more mileage if we worked together.

Geez, the average fiso is very conservation conscious but no one really knows it because we are still a group of ragtag here & there individuals. No one will ever take us seriously unless we make a BIG stand.............and until all the people looking to pin medals on their chests who run our various fishing bodies learn to work together, it is my opinion that we are destined for more of the same..............

Well it can't happen if the zones haven't been created yet, fish-n-dive.

Civil disobedience is common in the Byron Bay marine park, but not in the kind of mass display you described. In other parks anglers seemed to be cowered by jackboot tactics and massive penalties eg Port Stevens and the GBR.

If the people that start asking and complaining now about green zones, i just hope they got off their behinds recently and at least tried to do something about it, even though its not done and dusted, submissions closed this week: Round One, and I hope those who didnt get off their butts do so for Round Two.

    Re: We are all Wooses

    We aren't really woos'es.

We just cant agree with each other, have attacks of apathy, lots of gunna do's, different political ideals, you name it. There's always an excuse.

We are a very soft political target. Who will they aim for?

We are the public and there are a lot of us. Just about everyone has a go at fishing some time. We are also voters and lobbyists.

We need to learn to stick up for ourselves and we need to do it soon.

We are also conservationists who very strongly disagree with the EPA's pathetic attempts to protect the bay by stopping fishing in area's where most people just happen to fish.
What has fishing to do with urban/rural runoff, dredging, mangrove depletion caused by development of canal estates etc etc the list goes on. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. So why are we blamed for the EPA's failures.

    GREEN ZONES WONT STOP POLLUTION.

Get the cry going. Become passionate. Rip into the government and take them to task before YOUR fishing spots cease to exist. Dont say "this will never happen" thats another cop-out excuse to do nothing.

    Re: We are all Wooses

    Many trains of thought here.

Say you do get 100 boaties to plonk their craft in a " proposed " green zone.

Who's going to Police it ?

The DPI&F don't want to know about it, the water Police are not interested or have juristriction....

Then < OK, you get a photographer from the Green ( Courier ) Mail and a reporter.

This will be the headlines " Unlawful fishos destroy Pristine waters "

Think I am joking.... ??? It just happens that the certain on-air, high profile radio jock, super green greenie is married to the editor of the courier mail.

What chance to we have ?

In the end a political purge or 100,000 demonstrators is what is needed.

This is where we need the agreement of the peak fishing/recreation bodies and perhaps their coordinated lobbying.

Maybe we need a Recreational Fishing Union?

I can't tell if your having a shot at me or not (is your tongue in your cheek?) If I said yeah OK, I'll give it a go, would you be 1st in line to put your hand up to help? Or perhaps sit back and see what happens?

You know as well as I do that what we are all saying about apathy in the sport/hobby is true.

Someone mentioned 100 boats..........is there any reason why that cant be organised into 500 or even a 1000?

If we want to keep at least a bucket of water available for our kids to fish in I still maintain that we need some civil action now!!!

no mate..not tongue in cheek at all..i was serious. Lots of people come up with ideas but very few actually try and put them into practice..we all have ideas but with work, family and other comittments it is difficult to find the time...but if you have the time..go for it.

    There is a reason........apathy.

We have a group organised to run with this.

www.saveourbay.org.au is the website and the group is called

SOBA inc ( Save Our Bay Association Incorporated )

You know what is really funny ( not ), you can get 5,000 people PAY $100 a head to see a band/ performer for a 2 hour stint, yet ya can't get those same people to give up an hour of their time or to vote accordingly or to donate $20 to allow their kids and grand kids to enjoy Moreton Bay for years to come.. Sometimes human nature amuses me... no......... Confuses me.....

( apologies to those that are described above, just an analogy )

M62, just wanted to harp on the importance of her position and not name her... free publicity and all.

Well, dam-it I will.......and I hope this is the start of something more..........

I'm sober and I'm serious........this is the official launch of the Queensland Recreational Fishing Union!!!

I'm not after $$$ (not yet anyway) just a show of hands for who is serious and willing to save out pastime.......

If this initiative fails it will be because of the apathy of you the recreational fisher person.....not anyone else...........
