Does thicker line affect affect lure action ?

Some people I have spoken to say 'yes'.

Others have said 'no'.

What are your thougths?

With thinner line your lure may dive a bit deeper?

Absolutely will. Thinner line mean less pressure on the line from the water allowing a lure to run deeper then with thicker line. Thicker line can also impede the action of a lure.

What if one connects a heavy leader on end of thin diameter line (i.e. 80lb leader on 15kg Platypus Super 100 0.41mm diameter).

Will this heavy leader negate the benefits of having a thinner diameter line for trolling?

PS - max depth of my fishing/trolling is around 40m.

Line diameter is one of the more important variables under your control. Less is usually better.
How much your leader negatively impacts on lure action depends on the size of the lure being used. eg Most barra lures are fairly strong actioned and cop heavy leader if used with loop knots or snaps. Smaller lures are often dampened by heavy leaders. Most of your offshore lures have no problem with leader, but in most cases the running depth will definitely be altered with changes in mainline diameter. Again, impacts are greater on smaller lures.
There are large differences in the ability of lures to operate at the higher end of their speed range when pulled on heavier vs light lines. Finer braids <20lb are a godsend for inshore trolling

Line diameter does affect the lure action and in most cases a finer line will get you a better result for action. Topwater lures like poppers and surface skitters etc will have negligable effect from line diameters. The deeper you want to troll at the finer the line diameter will make things easier for you.

I suppose the biggest problem with smaller line diameters is they are more prone to damage and often times have less stretch and impact resistance esp with the braids.
There are two different needs in the rod design between braid lines and monofilament lines because of the differences in the stretch factor. Generally braids are fish with a more forgiving rod while trolling where monos can be fished on virtual broomsticks letting the line stretch absorb the impact of a strike.

My reel will be tyr30.

My rod will be Shimano Tcurve medium (10-15kg).

Targeted fish will be spanich Mac, Cobia, small tuna.

Based on this tackle, what size lures should I be using and hence what max diameter line should i be using beofre I destroy action of lures???

SHould I be using braid for trolling instead - given that I do not have broomstick fishing rods?

Try and find a happy medium. 30lb braid with a mono leader for a bit of spring. I would use about a two meter leader. I think fluro leader would be a waste but I have little experience with trolling sorry
