Hi guys
Have a weeks holiday in Yamba coming up and want to chase a few flathead on SP (shore based). Does anyone know what part of the river I should concentrate on, and what SP's I should look to use.
Thanks for your help

Thanks for the info guys...any idea what type of SP will do the damage???
Piddy, if you've jinxed the weather I'll be after you....
Caught some good Flathead on SPs at Yamba a while back.Wasnt using anything flash just the faithful old Mister Twister lures and flouro yellow prawn imitations(with lightest jigheads possible).
Fishing in a stretch a water near Yamba harbor at low tide over weed beds the fish were real hungry.I reckon with some of these new SPs you should go pretty well there.

hi Vic1, i was at yamba during the xmas holidays and had some success with land based sp's landing flathead and trevally. i will share what i did with you.
at the boat harbour there is a rock wall that you can drive out on and the trawler fleet tie up at. on the eastern side out near the end on a rising tide ( nearly full ) in the hours of sunrise or sunset cast 3 inch atomic jerk shads in pearl/blue or silver/flek on a 1/16th jighead. we caught trevally to 2kg, flathead to 3kg and some crazy ooglie thing.
there is a guy there in a floating fish factory that will sell you xlent fish cheap.
we also caught 30cm flathead in the area off whiting beach using the same gear during the day.
lucky enough to score a boat? try drifting the rock wall in the river mouth using a heavier jig head (3/8th). we scored some nice flathead and even a 35cm whiting grabbed a 4inch jerkshad powerbait in watermelon. i've never seen that before.
great place yamba,
have a good time.
cheers,
jak job lo
yamba is a great place! i caught my biggest fish there, beleive it or not just the type of fish you are targeting! flattys, i went about half way accros the southern wall, on around day break, and just sitting tehre on the rock with the waves smahing, and watching the surfers, and when its not rough you can see 10 - 15m to the bottom, seriously you could see any fish!, anyway i caught my flatty on a ball of mullet and a couple of trevs, and had a nice size EC just swim past casually.

We only fished a couple of sessions in my boat ...... but had the best results along the caravan pk rockwall & in the shallows near the boat ramp!Attachment 22552
We used mainly Gulp craws (camo) & 4" dropshots in Pumpkin & smelt
Lovely place

i reckon for flatheat use anything in your tacklebox. Last time i was there I nailed a few on 3" dropshot minnows of the pink lemonade variety.
hi there were lots of whitebait and gar around last time i was down a fortnight ago so i found sp's in white or light colours (squidgie drop bear) around 3" did the best as well as small pencils (over the weed beds and rocks) worked well, but pretty much everything will work in the right spots
Thanks for all the replies guys, look forward to the week ahead
Not sure if you're still around Vic1 but I just got back from a week at Iluka. There were lots of flathead around the river mouth and on the adjacent beaches - probably due to the run-off of freshwater from the rains last month. At low tide the water is still pretty dirty and quite fresh even at the mouth. I had one land-based session with SP's at Brown's Rocks (just a few k's up the river) where I would normally pick up a few lizards and only got one hit from a lizard in the whole session. Around the mouth lots of people were getting flathead against the walls and in the corners of the bays and beaches. There were plenty of good size mamas amongst them too.I was mostly bait fishing the washes along the breakwaters for bream and picked up flathead every time - up to 4 in a session.
