That's the magnetic cast control, move it around and it will vary the resistance on the spool it's like a frictionless brake. They are good for people that are starting out with a baitcaster as the reduce the amount of over run or birdsnest's.When i was guiding i had a couple of crestfire's for client's to use that were having trouble using a baitcaster, hope this help's.

When learning to cast, keep this dial on a higher number to reduce the chance of a birdnest. As you get more confident you can start to wind it back down.
But don't get too confident too quickly...birdnest's are a royal pain to untangle.
Use it in conjunction with the knob on the handle side until you work out what's good for you.
Some folk wind them right off so the spool spins like crazy, for some extra distance. It's there for a good reason.
I've always got mine on about 4. Very rarely get any tangles unless it's really really windy or If I just don't have my mind on the job.
Remember small casts for a while and educate that thumb.

    keechie,
the other guys are spot on. once you've got the hang of it the way to set it up is hold the rod horizontal to the ground, click the reel into free spool the lure should fall to the ground at a reasonable pace but also very smooth. now when the lure hits the ground if the spool keeps over spinning then you adjust the dial you asked about a click till the spool doesnt over spin anymore.
    hope this helps mate

It is sometimes harder for a beginner to learn to cast with the magnetic brakes set on 10 than it is on 7-8. Often the 9-10 settings are more there for when the magnets start to lose power, which all magnets do over time. The higher settings on a new reel can sometimes slow the cast too quickly and actually cause birdsnests.

Whilst I mostly fish with mine on 3-5 I will sometimes go higher if casting lighter lures into a breeze. It's handy to be able to make those adjustments without needing to undo the side plate, which is one of the reasons why I prefer magnetic over centrifugal.
