When painting you have to turn a 3D object into 2D, so you paint the things you need to appear furthest away first.
In a landscape you would do the sky first, then the hills in the distance then the trees closer etc etc. Then you're not trying to make edges meet as you are painting the whole background then putting the foreground in front of it.
Same principal here.

Looks great....he sure does use a lot of paint layers.
Just saw this work in person at the Fred Hall Fishing & Tackle show in Longbeach.
It's even better in person.
Does prints & T shirts too, so I reckon I'll be needing a bigger bag for the return trip
