    best dead jack bait?

After a few pointers. Have caught the jack bug and need a bit of help. Having trouble getting live bait at my usual haunt whcich is not usually a prob and wondering what dead bait would be bst to use. Mullett flesh, pillies etc...
Just after a few different options as the jacks are def there just no live bait.

mullet flesh seems to be the best for me. Anything oily is really good. If you do however get a heap of livies on another trip, instead of chucking them over the side at the end of the day, take em home and chuck em in the freezer, then you will have some local dead baits to use.

Had a week on Gold Coast Canals, the neighbour catches plenty of Jack on live herring, if he cant get Herring he uses fresh mullet fillets. Long thin strips

    Hey,

I reckon a half pillie is the go, sounds dodgy compared to mullet fillets and fresh dead herring etc but they really love the pillies. Buy the good ones Aust. pillies if you can. Love the feeling of drifting a lightly weighted half pillie into the snag and nearly getting my arms ripped off on the strike!!

Mullet strips, cut straight out of a whole fresh mullet works best. I add a dab of Stimulate drops too.
2nd choice is dead herring, butterflied.
    Also Bonito strips works well.

Ive had no luck with pillies tho.

Believe it or not, I've had great success with ox kidney, especially in the canals. Also expect big bream as by-catch.

A fillet off what ever is plentiful in the area at the time, usually herring or mullet. I don't think it makes any difference, if a jack sniffs either he's not going to leave it and go looking for something else, they are not 5 year old kids that will leave a steak hoping someone will give them McDonald's. A lump of fresh fish is a lump of fresh fish.

I've been using live 10cm mullet and not getting touched and had a mate getting smashed over and over on pillies, so I tried the pillies and bingo. So sometimes I think they are lethargic and will only take dead baits. So I think its worth having a live bait and a dead bait out until U can work out what the preference is at that time.

Butterflying gets the scent out there and will bring the in from further away. Even on a livie I'll sometimes put a little cut or 2 just to help things along. Pillies obviously have there own strong scent. I have never used it but would imagine Macktuna would be a killer bait, due to the blood & oil content.

That's my thoughts, I could be wrong!

    Cheers Didley

I've been using fresh green prawns around the rock walls and having good success.
