Does size matter
Does it matter what size antenna you have on a vhf radio I have just fitted 1m s/steel on my boat but I have not tried it out to see how far it will transmit.
All so do you run on high or low power
Thanks Paul

Re: Does size matter
vhf works on line of sight so the height of the ariel off the water is what matters, high low power depends where you are and who you're trying to talk to

Re: Does size matter
As it was explained to me, transmitting power has little to do with antenna size but the unit itself (1/5/25W) . Receiving however is very effected by antenna size position on boat, angle etc.
As for high/low power, the regs state you need to use the minimium possible (14.1). If you choose not to get your licence at least read the regs. There's a link in this post http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/sho...d.php?t=125792
