Hi Everyone,
This is my first posting on your site and I may be in the Wrong forum so please let me know if this is the case.
I moved to Mackay in 06 and have a few opportunities to go fishing both on the river and out at sea. I have fallen hook line and sinker for it and would love to learn more about it.
Last Saturday my son caught a fish (orange striped ) that is most probably quiet common in these northern waters but I have not seen it before and would love to know what it is or if it is ediable or has any restrictions on it. This particular one was under size (I think) and he returned it back but manage to get a photo first.
My question is. Where can I go to identify it and any others that we may come across.? and Is there somewhere I can show the photo so that it can be identified ?
I hope someone can put me on the right track so I can learn more while having fun.
Thanks in advance to anyone that may be able to help.
Regards,
Madeleine

Welcome to the site Madeleine. If you were to post up a pick (here) usually you'll get an answer within 30 mins. Otherwise Grants guide to fishies is the best bet. Was the fish caught in the river or out in the deep blue part.
The only orange striped fish I know of is a hussar like the one in the pic.

G'day Madeleine and, welcome to the Mackay area. The easiest way to put a photo on the forum is when you reply to a thread, scroll down and you will see
Additional Options....Attach files and a small box" Manage attachments". Click on that and a 'pop-up' will appear. If you have stored any photos on the computer, you can retrieve them when you click "browse". Then select the photo you need, click "open" then "upload" finally click on submit Reply when you have finished answering the reply.
I believe the fish your son caught was one of these, the stripey, or spanish flag, good eating if you get a big one (they only grow to 45cm). Plenty around Mackay.
This link is about the best for identifying fish.

Could it be a hussar? If it is the legal size is 25mm and the bag limit is 10 to the best of my knowledge. Good eating.
