Hi all,
Was wondering if someone could clarify what is meant by "twitching the rod" when working a hard body (I'm talking fishing tackle, not wedding tackle ).
Is it something like holding the rod at say about 4 o'clock position and flicking the tip toward the water to about 5 o'clock postion? Lifting the rod similar to soft plastic fishing? Neither of these and something totally different?
My first hard body outing is planned for Easter in the Noosa River targeting Bream/Tarpin/Trevally. So far I've bought a Rebel Pop R, Jackall Deep Chubby 38mm and a bunch of BgiW minnow and shad cheapies up to 52mm.
Yes flicking the rod tip downwards towards the water. Varying how hard/fast you flick downwards will alter the depth and/or distance the lure travels through the water. Also it's worth experimenting with a stroke of more or less than the 4 o'clock to 5 o'clock that you mentioned. But basically you are on the right track.
With the Rebel Pop R, short little flicks that cause the lure to spit up water and make the 'popping' sound, without the lure travelling very far is typically what I aim for. I attempt to get the lure causing a disturbance on the surface, but I want it to stay in the strike zone close to the structure I have cast at as long as possible. So I typically try to use a short jab followed by a long pause, waiting for the ripples to settle before twitching again. For variation I will do a couple of short jabs but always have a slight pause in between each one.
Thanks for the advice everyone.
As to where Tailorboi it's a first time in the Noosa but we'll be on a houseboat with my 4.3 Aquamaster tagging along so basically the plan is to just scoot around and explore the system. Any spots X's?
If you're heading up river try flicking a few lures at the myriad of snags between Lake Cooroibah and Lake Cootharaba. Towards the mouth at first light flicking lures around any of the bridges is worth a go. How well the system fishes might depend a lot on how clear the water is.
