You seem sto have a fair idea chief
We use whippy rods and sort or flick the rod down and wind then flick don again like shaking it giving it the motion of a prawn flicking thru the water . If you search youtube for squidjigging there are some great vids on there mate

There is a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot

I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges

    Re: Using Squid Jigs

My best lesson was when I could see a squid in the shallows off the Victoria point boat ramp, but try as I might, it would not attack my jig. This bloke pulled up next to me with his own gear and asked if he could give it a try. Same type of squid jig, but the difference was that once getting the attention of the squid, he allowed the jig to drop all the way to the bottom of the seabed, then waited for about 5 to 10 seconds. That was the signal to the squid to rush its prey. It was amazing!! The jig looked like a sick fish that speared its head into the sand. This guy walked away with the squid I had been trying to get for about ten minutes.

I often put a Squid light off the back of our big boat and at times its like they are on a suicide mission and other times I have to finesse them with hops, stops and short twitches to get a strike

    Hey chief,

Throw your jig as far as possible and let in sink.
Then dont be afraid to use a big long stroke with your rod...quite a fast bit long stroke then wind the slack up and sit for a second....then repeat.
They donty mind quite a fast whip then pause.

    Watch the ink...

I have found that a long cast out and then a slow retrieve with a few slow twitches of the rod usually does the trick. Letting it sink a bit too is a good idea. Other times when squid is not my primary aim, I just cast a squid jig out and then leave the rod in the rod holder while I fish for other things. Rarely come home empty handed.
