Re: Good cheap reels
As stated above any cheap Shimano would be a good choice.A bit tight on rotation(non or one bearing models) but the drags are A1 and they are built to last.

Re: Good cheap reels
Move down to any of the second string brands like Okuma and you get a lot more value for money.
I have 3 Okuma reels and havn't paid more than $50 for any of them........ of course keep an eye on the sales and discounts....... never buy at full retail.
I've sopken to a couple of other Okuma devotees, & they seem to be keen on the value for money and the reliability.
I Have two zeon 40's which are a delightfull reel, 5 bearings & sweet as. I picked one up at the place we dont mention and the other on Ebay... both cost me $50 give or take a buck or so. The normal street price on these is about $100.
The most recent is a Tazar 55 which I think is now discontinued but there are a few arround 3 bearings and not as sweet as the zeon but not bad at all. It cost me $45 odd. No deals at the time.
All the Okumas have a lifetime waranty.
both the above have bearing based anti reverse but also have a pawl as back up.
If you are realy looking for a bargin, check out the unpacked Fin Nor reels that that unmentionable place has for $24 ish......I know I've mentioned em elsewhere......The deal isn't too good to be true. at the price its worth a punt.
They were originaly labled at around $100.
On the subject of the down market shimano reels....I good mate baught both his kids outfits with the small black reel with the rear drag.... cheapest thing with an "S" on it i seem to think........ he was most unimpressed.... the anti reverse packed in on both reels.
I had a couple of early JW reels come my way in a deal once....OMG they were horid..... both under land fill now, didn't even make it to the rod rack..... I understand the more recent offerings are better.
For basic workin' mans fishin', you should be able to get something decent for arround $50 to $100 if you look around and shop wisely.
cheers
