    Re: Big Barra

    G'day flathead,

    From a scientific paper i have been reading about barra in the Aligator River the authors said the largest barra they caught was 180cms . They caught 64 fish and were able to describe a relationship between length and weight for freshwater barra.

    Weight = 0.0296 x Length ^ 2.808

    so for that 180cm fish it would have wighed ~63.7kg.

    It may not be the biggest but at least its officially on record and a starting point for you. Maybe Harro has seen bigger

    Cheers
    Dave

    Mate, you'd have more luck getting an answer if you posted this question in the freshwater section as impoundment relates directly to freshwater not saltwater.

    Cheers Jeff.

    Re: Big Barra

    In 1999 Dave Powell caught a world record barra in Lake Tinaroo.It was 124cms(49inches) and weighed 37.85kg(83lb 7oz).
    Ive got a picture of it in Rex Hunt's Fishing Australia and it is a fat barra for its length,not very proportional when comparing it to a saltwater barra.Do a Google search.
    I have found Saltwater barra may vary in weight by a couple of kilos be the same length.

    Some of the very old photos back in the turn of last century had some real monsters in them. I guess you would find these photos on the walls of old pubs these days in out of the way areas.

    Some of the old croc pictures in early last century are unthinkable now too.

    Re: Big Barra

    There were some photos some huge fish in the river along the Bundaberg rum distillery that died when they had a big spill into the river that caught on fire, 20's or 30's I think if memory serves me correctly. can't remember if these were barra or jewies, but they were as big as the men in the photos.

    worth a look if you are up at the distillery
