Any old scrap meat will do. They aren't that fussy. Fatty meat, chicken, fish frames.

Be careful using soap in livestock dams, once there is the slightest bit of soap scum on the surface the cattle will not drink from it. It is far safer to use a meat bait than soaps in these dams. In running creeks however soap is the best of baits.

Cat bikkies is pretty good too! Always readily available at our house. I know soap works but is that really good for the river system? I mean if every tom, dick and harry were to use it.
If you're ever left without a bait for your trap and no bait for your hook, I've used a big bunch of leaves off a tree before and that kept me fishing. I guess they congregate in there for shelter from predators or something, but it works.
