Hi im 13 And i started prawning 2yrs ago and i find the best way is to go at night with a torch and shine into the water and get your top pocket cast net (preferebly 12 foot) and cast on top of them its so much easier than scooping
Hi Bream buster - you don't say where you live. If you're in Qld, you can use a cast net for prawning, but not in NSW. I'm not sure about the rest of Oz. Give us a bit more info about where you are and I'm sure you will get some good advice.
PS - try the search button as well, there's probably lots of posts about "prawn" or "prawning".
Best of luck!!

Im 16 but and I had to learn it all for myself when I started so I hope this info helps you. Look for creek mouths, deep holes and drains and throw the net, jigging it as it rolls along the bottom. Prawns live in the mud so ripping the lead across the bottom stirs them up and they get stuck in the net. Prawns are influenced by the tides, and the moon phases to an extent. Full and new moons bring the big tides and this is when the prawns run for the open water, I have found that the three to five days leading up the either moon phase works a treat. The most important things to remember when prawning is to give the net time to sink, have a lot of lead on the net, and when you find the school, STAY ON THEM, DONT MOVE OFF THEM. Hope this helps you out a bit mate.

Bindy 99, any good sounders will find prawns if they are in the water column. Im not really sure what they would like on the sounder because all sounders may show different things. I dont use the sounder to find prawns because i know where they are and when they are there at my spot x.

Bondy 99,
u raise a good point there. However, the prawning grounds where I go have been there for ages and have been for 20 years. It doesnt get flogged as much as the prawning spots in brissy though
Fair enough, the place I ususally been do has been redeveloped thanks to greedy councils and developers, all for marina and canal developments (EPA must be corrupt or have no balls). Good luck with this upcoming banana prawn season, I'm sure you will do well.
Mine will be non eventful. car has just blown a cylinder head gasket, another 2 weeks at the earlist before it can be looked at and parts ordered, its only 34 years old.
Anyone getting any around Brisbane area or towards Jacobs Well way?
