    Last weekend at Glenlyon

As a break from barra fishing my son Kyle (KH15) and I went to Glenlyon to try and get amongst the yellowbelly and murray cod.

It was unbelievably hot on Friday and Saturday and the water quality was quite poor due to recent inflows.

We tried deep, we tried shallow, we tried casting to structures, we tried trolling open water, we tried hardbodies, we tried spinnerbaits, we tried chatterbaits, we tried live baits..........all for one small 40cm yellowbelly for me trolled up on a 75mm Oar Gee Plow and one Dewfish (49cm) for Kyle caught on live shrimp.

Not many fish, only a few hits on lures and a small collision with a rock that damaged the prop on my boat!

This was not our most successful fishing trip but its a beautiful place with plenty of fishable spots - we will be back to try again!!

hi mate i only just sent a pm to you earlier to see how you got along, the water is very murky at the moment and will fish better when it clears, im glad you didnt go fishless but, ouch that prop looks good where did you hit the rock..dont want to be hitting something like that myself. it is a top spot when firing will keep you informed. cheers bdowdy..brett

    Thanks Brett.

Its a lovely spot and an easy drive from Brisbane. I'm told March/April are the gun months for chasing cod. There is certainly good potential there.

Actually damaged prop (I think) on a rocky outcrop on the northern side of limestone caves while retrieving a snagged spinnerbait.

We got our fish (and most hits) along the side of the deeper big weed beds near Tea Tree Hollow where the water was much clearer. Fish were everywhere on the sounder but we couldn't get them to play!

Yeah, something like that Brian. It's always good to vary it up a bit though nothing gives a buzz like a big mad barra on the line!

That prop was a sh*thouse one anyway (caused cavitation) so I've bought a new improved one which I will test this weekend before I head up to Monduran. The mended one can be my 'spare'!

I'll let you know how I go up there - forecast is already for cooler weather with strong SE winds!

Yes Brett - that ribbon weed is a pain in the arse but full of fish. When we found the edges we ended up with a few hits and that small yella.

I'll probably give the cod another go in mid April if I get a chance. No doubt I will be asking you a whole lot of new questions now that I am a little familiar with the layout at Glenlyon!!

Pete, having met you and your son Oct 07 at Lake M I know you are committed!

Nice report, sorry to read about the prop - easier to fix than a thumb full of treble?

A great effort in trying conditions.

I would have called that an Eel tail Catfish

Where do you get Dewfish from? is it different to a catty or just a different name? or maybe the correct name?

Anyway your right Glenlyon is a top spot, and at least you caught something.

Thanks Rob. These fish are known by many names - eel tailed catfish, tandan, dewfish, freshwater jewfish and others. All are correct. Dewfish comes from South Australia I think.

I grew up in Victoria and we just called 'em catties!

Whatever you call them they put up a good fight and are OK on the chew (though ours was released).
