    Hains 585R/200 Etec.

Hi to all, new member so go easy on me to start with. I am looking to buy a new boat in what seems to be the ultimate combination of the Hains Hunter 585R with the 200 Etec . I would love to hear from anyone with advice, what you think, if you have one, etc. Fishing mainly the bay but off shore is what i am wanting to do more of.

OK be prepared for a Barrage from the anti Etec Brigade, then a counter attack from the pro Etec Brigade, then same from the Haines lovers and haters, and then from the narrow minded only one brand in the World group!! but for my thoughts (for what it's worth) buy it and enjoy it, you may have some drama (all things can break) but as a general rule, the Motor will be good and the Boat will be good, so "just do it"

agree with Noelm, as much chance of that rig being as good or better than the next - enjoy the experience

that'd be a pretty good combo, holy krap it'd go fast. even if you don't stick to that exact combo, anything along those lines will be a pretty good fishing/fun package.

my mate is about to pick his up on Thursday this week, its the exact same combo 585r with a 200 Etec (small bore). He used a demo unit for a weekend with twin 90 etec's and said it absolutley blew away his old Haines 560sf in both ride and stability - they are built like a brick. He had to wait 6 months as apparently this is one Haines' biggest selling models atm
good choice in that size range

you lucky bastard, I've got a 580 breeze with a 150 etec and thought that went pretty quick... the 585r looks like an awesome boat and a great motor to match...

Let us know how ya go.

I'm all for the Haines Hunter, but i dont know if the Etec makes it the ultimate package. Just a package IMO. Also, is it really necessary to go with the 200? I have a 200 4 stroke on the back of my Haines Hunter 213c and i it will do 47mph at WOT. And being an older hull its probably going to weigh a sh*t load more than the 585, not to mention a meter longer..
Just thinking in terms of $$..

Is it necessary. Hell yeah... Personaly I would go the 250,or evven the 300, if the transom is rated for it...

Thanks for the comments, 200 for 2k more than 150, works less for same speed, equates to same or less consumption and more power if you need it are my thoughts.

Just finshed purchasing a 585r myself.

The boat will have a 200 4 stroke Yammie on its bum and will ride on a EKR mackay trailer....

Only 300? I heard the new Merc 350 is rated at 380 Hp at the prop. It'd go orright on a Haines 585, huh? While we're at it, an old USAAF Sidewinder strapped to the roof might give some useful short term punch, good for clearing a nasty situation on th bar, and a happy second motive source...

But seriously, if a 250 belts my CC685 out of the hole and up to 40 knots, the 200 on the Haines is going to be a belter. Do it! I'll enjoy being left in your wake! Small pots or big? They make the 200 in an HO don't they? You might not need the big pots anyway, reckon that big lawn mower donk will do the job either way

    Cheers,

Reckon you're on the right track Wingfisher, sounds like a good combination.

One thing I have learn't from the last two boats I have bought is that I would rather have a motor with power to spare than one that just does an adequate job.

My last boat was a 5.5 plate ali with a 115 Opti and whilst it was trouble free and generally great, I always felt that the motor was working too hard at 25-30 knots.

My current boat (6mtr plate ali) I had built with a heavy duty transom to take a 200 Verado and it cruises 25-30 knots so much easier (lower revs) and at better economy. Plus, I've got the extra power now to rip up past 40 knots if I want to!

    Cheers
    Brendan
