Sitting at work yesterday waiting for knock off, I recieved a phone call from Rod asking if I wanted to head out to Rattlesnake. An offer I could not refuse. My mate Ryan joined us for the morning fish.
Launched from the Coastguard ramp at around 0400 and made our way to Rattle. Our first stop was at Lorne Reef.
Burley trail started and baits in. Ryan was first to hook up to a nice little noah, kindly modelled by our skipper for the day, Rod.
Things went a little quite at this spot so we decide to have a troll round Rattlesnake to a deep hole round at Herald Island. We had no hits at all. We then come around the south side of Herald to see birds working. We made our way for the bait schools to see some pretty impressive Tuna busting the surface.
I was standing ready with the TSS4 and slice. Well Rods line was nailed and fish on was the call. I made my way to the bow and started to cast my slice. First throw, nothing. Second throw I let it sink a little longer, flicked the bail and started to real it in. First crank of the handle and I was hooked up. Line was disapearing from my real pretty quick so with a few turns of the drag, quite a few pump and winds and 10 minutes later had a nice Longtail at the boat.
Ryan was more than happy to play deckie for us and Rods fish was boated first, followed closely by mine.
We decided to drop the pick an catch our breath, with burley flowing and baits out. Rod had a pillie under a balloon out back and something made a grab for it, unfortunatley all the teeth marks were around the hooks.
After awhile and no hits and getting our breath back we thought we might try and get back onto the Tuna. The bait schools were still being hammered by the birds but it looked as though the Tuna had moved on.
Moved back to drop the pick and try some more bottom bashing. It just wasn't Ryans day, 2 good hits and 2 good misses, to be fair he was bricked on one of those two occasions.
My bait was next to get hammered and I managed to boat a small GT.
With the action getting quite and the temerature gauge rising we decided to call it a day.
But we couldn't help but throw a couple of lures out back and have a troll past Middle reef. No luck of course.
All in all, it was a great day on the water and we were happy with what was caught.
Thanks for the trip out Rod.
It was a good morning on the water, I can say it was an absolute pleasure fishing with Corey and Ryan welcome back any time, I think next time though we might nead a bit wider and hit the bomber.
Cany wait till Easter but I amquietly confident that we be haveing another little outing before then.
Those longtails pull really hard, felt sorry for Ryan getting bricked twice.
Well done boys... the fish were definately on the chew this weekend.... tuna were everywhere we headed. i'll put up a report from the reef soon in the offshore section.
Looks like you'll be enjoying tuna cakes for a while
