    Red Bass v Mangrove Jack

Attached are two shots one of the head of a 6kg red bass and the other of a 8kg Jack. Note the difference. The Bass is red with a pit or indentation running from the eye to wards the snout. The Jack is maroon with no pit and canine teeth.
Hope this helps those who get confused between the two.

    Cheers

Sure do. In reef areas north of Fraser Island most red bass have been associated with ciguatara poisoning.

The reason I posted this thread is because I have seen experienced fishermen call red bass mangrove jack especially if caught at night.

Ciguatera poisoning according to the fish guide. They also mention the notch in front of the eye.

That photo of the bass was taken by me a few years ago at the boat harbour at Hervey Bay following an offshore charter trip around the top of Fraser Island.
The Bass was caught at night on a ledge 4ks offshore from Fraser Island at the same time 8 large Jacks were landed. The guy who caught it thought it was a jack and so did the Deckie. I pointed out that it was a red bass and the the guy still took it home. Wonder if he is still alive.

I was warned by other former regulars ( who no longer post reports on Ausfish) that there are a lot of knockers on this site. I have posted a lot of offshore reports and have been offshore fishing for 45 years both as a professional and recreational angler and can even remember the time before Red Bass were a no take species.

The purpose of my post was to highlight the differences between the two species so as to help fellow Ausfish members. Some Ausfish members take comments like yours personally but it doesn't worry me as I am too busy planning my next trip offshore.

    Cheers
    Barry
