My Raymarine C80 sea temp readout is driving me NUTS

Okay, they are brilliant bits of gear, but this problem is driving me crazy...

Three weeks ago the sea temperature readout was showing no less than 38 degrees celsius....mmmm. Normally 22 to 24 degrees in my neck of the woods (Perth and Rottnest Island)

Then during another trip over the weekend, it had jumped to FIFTY FIVE degress!!! And yes, the transducer is in the water, not the engine bay....

Can anybody suggest where I might look to solve this idiot reading? The Raymarine display is mounted on the flybridge console of my Randell 38, fed from a through-the-hull transducer.

    Any suggestions appreciated.

    Regards, Greg

Have a go with a bucket of water supported under the tranducer plus a thermometer. Or see how good it is with ice water if you can't get a thermometer. My Lowrance X-91 stopped reading water temp; after getting them to test the leads and later the display unit, it turned out all the fogging had corroded the electronics. The replacement unit never arrived, but eventually a new X-125 did.
It doesn't talk to the temp(or speed) senders for the X-91 so now I have to use my big toe.
I really miss not having the readings but I'm blowed if I'm going to buy another set of transducers and cables, and refit the whole caboodle.

    Greg,
I have a C80 but it is for GPS & plotter use only. Sounder is a Furuno 585.
With a through hull on a boat that big you are between a rock & a hard place. I would suggest taking a pic of the temp readout & then make arrangements to get the C80 head unit checked. If the head is OK, then the ducer must be the problem. Get Ray to send you a replacement ducer using the pic as evidence if you are under warranty then swap them around at your next haulout. If it is out of warranty get one in from the US. A$ is real good.................US92 cents.

You could buy a cheap sounder with temp readout to get you by until you next slip the boat.
    ROLL TIDE, ROLL.................

Yeah thanks Peter, a bucket under the transducer could be hard, the boat weighs ten tons.
But yes, I'll take a pic of the readout and email it to Raymarine as a start...

Wonder of the sea will suddenly start boiling when the readout reaches 100...

    Greg,

It sounds like a problem I had a few years ago with my sounder, where I had a external temp / speed sensor to the main transducer and it was a faulty temperature sensor.

Maybe I suggest you check your sensors before anything else, can you get access to a replacement to plug into unit for a check?

Thanks Trevor, I'll try that.... I did email Raymarine about the problem but they haven't bothered to reply...but the sensor is probably the first thing to check, I'll ask the local Raymarine guy...

    Cheers, Greg

Have you double checked the transducer connection at the back of the head unit?

I would check for possible moisture or oxidizing here first, especially given it is the flybridge unit.
