How long a rod for an Alvey ?

I have a 6000BCV Alvey reel currently on an Alvey 625L Rod. While this is I beleive a good match, can I go to a longer Rod and how long can I go ?

I'm going back to Fraser in two weeks and would like to get furthur out into the surf.

I have a 12"6 Snyder Glass, works a treat at Fraser.
The longer the rod the heavier, thats the reason I spent good money.
Some cheaper blanks are on the heavy side, cant make for a long day casting

No reason you couldn't use a 13'6" rod with a 6" reel. For that matter you could probably use a 15 footer...........
Not sure how long your current rod is, but generally, the longer the rod the further you can cast.
Captain Stabin makes a good point, the longer the rod the heavier it will be to hold, although unless you intend spinning, shouldn't be too much of a drama, although a 15' would be a handful unless it was made on a very lightweight, and hence expensive, blank.
Keep in mind, the further you cast, you more work you have to do winding that Alvey!
    Cheers.

I agree with Capt about going with a Snyder Glas but as your rod (625L Light Surf) is 12" I'd go to a 13"6. Your 6"reel will be fine.

I've got a gary howard 13'6" with a 6000 alvey on it. The perfect combination, for me anyhow.

I use a 6000BCVR on a 13'6" Gary Howard Surf Classic. I've also got a 650c5 and 625b that I sometimes use on the same rod for heavier stuff, but I prefer the 6 inch reel the most as it's lightest to hold all day.

    Good luck,
    Mike

Re: How long a rod for an Alvey ?

I depends on your preferance. I like to use heavier reels, but ive run 6 inch's on 10 foot rods and 14 foot rods, they will handle them very well. But some thing you will find out, with a small reel diametre and long casting distance it will take longer to get the rig in than if you were using a bigger reel. At first i thought is wouldnt make that bigger difference, but with a 14 foot rod casting 100 m with a 6 inch vs 7 inch, that extra 3 inches per rev makes a big difference.

they say a big reel for a big rod beacuse it balences out the outfit. The guide is for a fibreglass rod, obviously you can run lighter with composite rods.

All in all. yes you can go longer

    cheers

I would go the 13'6'' but that is my opinion, you could probably go a bit smaller or bigger
