    Noosa National Park!!!

Hi, I'm heading to Noosa over the Easter Holidays and I'm going to try the Noosa National Park a few times as I don't get to fish of the rocks often. What fish congregate at Fairy Pools? Which fish congregate at Hells Rock? Will soft plastics work? What Baits? What size lines? Is Fairy Pools Safer than Hells Rock? All help is needed.

    Cheers Tom

The two places are part of the same headland and basically share everything on offer.
As for tackle it will depend on what you are prepared to carry 2.7km out there and back plus bait/lures and food /water.
I carry three rods a gaff and a 10-12kg rucksack usually.
One rod is a 4126 for catching gar with 4kg line 2nd is a js102 9w for livebaiting the gar and third is a 8' 10kg spin stick for throwing irons for spaniards etc.

None of the rocks are actually "safe" because from any rock you can and are at the mercy of the seas. Play it safe and only go out there on days that are conducive to good weather, not what we have been dealing with for the past two months almost non-stop. Enough people have been washed off Noosa Heads before today, and i know of two definite fatalities off Double Island Point headland while I have been in the area.

I got washed off DI Point about 20 yrs ago on almost a flat calm day from Athertons Rock. There was less than a metre of swell and oily calm and i got complacent and a surge about 2 feet larger than the rest came up and took my feet from under me while i was landing a fish. Took months for the cuts and shit to heal.

    Hello,

I fish the Noosa national park area on a regular basis,

Around the fairy pools area, I think it is probably the safest of the hells gates area rocks, but you should still use precaution.

There are some huge stingrays in the area, and I mean huge. Also there is some squire and rat kingies that patrol the area in pairs. Bring some metal slugs with really good quality trebles.

There are some really big bream, dart and trevally. I just use a 3” powerbait minnow and you can catch almost anything that takes a lure.

There are heaps of “happy moments” in the area that will take your soft plastic so be careful handling those.

However, the area is only good with light winds, small swell or westerly winds.

    Hello,

Fairy pools is the pick of the two, i reckon. Plenty of variety. Good Bream around the washes (Caught plenty on whole pillies). Good pelagics in the right conditions. Spanish to 20kg on drifted pillies or live Gar, Boofheads(Y'Tail Kings) to 15kg on livies, Good Luck Hang ON!! and Longtails smashing the local gar to bits early morning. Good Fun!! Watch the water and take a LONG pole gaff. Worst thing about there is carrying the fish back to the car.
Good spot for Tailor and School Macks too, never caught much fishing the bottom there though.

    Tunaticer..

When is the best time of year to head out to the National Park? I live in sunshine beach and have been running down to A-bay a few times and noticed the headlands down there, particularly the headland on the Sunshine beach side. Have you fished any of these?

You mentioned you usually get gars as livies, what's the best way to catch the little buggers? I have caught them in mooloolaba river with a float and bread once before but there were hundreds of them schooling so it was quite easy. Do you use a live bait pool?

I am pretty keen to get down there!!

    Chamelion,

If my car can make the journey I'd join in. I got the thing running but it could be running better, still using oil and water to some degree.

    Re: Noosa National Park!!!

I think it'd be better to go with someone rather than alone; especially since its a fair walk and you'll be fishing off rocks....safety first!

And the bonus is, if there are two of you you can fish two different methods and/or interchange your approach. An advanced tactical plan might be an idea otherwise make it up as you go along according to the conditions.

One could cast metals while the other one catches livies or floats out a gar or pilly etc. And while one guy fishes the other can rig so there'll always be a supervised line out in the water.

I've been fishing by myself before and it can be frustrating having to use one technique at a time when you've got gear for two or more set-ups with you.

Then its the time you take to get your next rig ready - then you wonder if you gave the first rig enough time to get results. Too much contemplation...

Plus with two people, the gaffing would be easier to manage & safer.

Bondy - That car of yours sounds like a royal pain in the butt. What is it?

morgs6 - I'm easy.. I was hoping someone with knowledge of the area would put their hand up and suggest what we'd need to take.

I'm pretty much set for anything I think.

    Re: Noosa National Park!!!

Fair enough. Well I just bought a new reel off ebay and will be picking up a rod over the weekend, so will be set for some action soon.

As tunatiser said we just need some livies (gar) or other species, some bait as back up and a few steel slugs. It's obviously a little difficult/impossible to transport livies caught elsewhere to the headlands so I'll have to try snag a few down there. Might even get a few in the river the day before and even if they are dead they will probably be better than those soggy pilchards from the shop. A-Bay beach could go alright for a few live whiting/bream...

I have also been toying with the idea of using a balloon to float the bait out. So yeah hopefully some fun times ahead..

Yo, It's 1974 Leyland Marina 262, (6cyl) coupe, twin SU carbies, yep 13" Mag wheels. no rust just a heap of shit at present.

Then again I've had the bastard for over 25 years with no problems and driven around the clock about 10 X or so.
