Fish Identity help

Caught this lil fella in my cast net the other day, didn't realise he was in there until i got spiked by him (and god dam it hurt). Took me about 20 mins to untangle all his spikes out of the net, but was realeased live and well . I was at Colleges Crossing in Ipswich by the way.

Ah and sorry for the poor photo quality, was taken on my phone whilst i was in a relative amount of pain from where he got me

Mate i would say that is a bullrout

Definitely a bullrout delightful little bastards in cast nets at night. Sometimes in the top end of the pine you can cop a dozen or more a cast and you cant see them in the dark too easily.

Yeh i can see the likeness between the two. This guy had more spikes on him than anything i've ever pulled out of the water before. He would have only been around 10-15cm

Are they a protected species or anything ?

This may be a silly question but are they related the the stonefish in any way?

Certainly a bullrout. To relieve the pain from the sting, put your hand or whatever go stung ( commonly feet) into hot water. As hot as you can stand without burning your self.

BULLROUTS

A relative of the marine stonefish, it sports very similar venomous spines on its fins. Human victims usually accidentally stand on or brush the fish, the spines even penetrating light footwear and delivering venom deep below the skin. The pain is excruciating but the venom is, happily, quickly destroyed by heat.

Yep, I'd call it for a Bullrout....ouchy little mongrels. Caught one when I was a kid went to grab it off my handline and the old man smacked my hand away real hard. I think they are related to stonefish....someone like cammy would know a bit about these fish, I believe he has a stonefish in one of his tanks

Yep thats a bullrout ,i grabbed one out of the net when i was 10 or so.Grandad say,s "you shouldn,t have picked that up".I wish i,d known about the heat, i think he wanted me to pee on it from memory!

definatly a bullrout/stonefish, they are a very cool fish and eat whateva they can fit in there mouth, they vary with color from there surroundings, they are not a protected species, all there spines have poison glands except for the spikes next to its mouth. I actually got spikes castnetting at shorncliffe pier a couple of weeks ago, and it didnt hurt that much but luckily it was the spines on the mouth.

if you get stung put your hand in water as hot as you can withstand and the pain should go away in a while. and i actually got another stonefish yesterday, so now i got 2, more fins to watch out for.
