Hervey bay is the home of big flathead...
97cm at Pottsville.
Saw one caught 1.15m at the Logan and saw a MUCH bigger one at Bribie (Red Beach) twice in a few days.......estimated at 1.5-1.6m (have witnesses who saw it to...). Was swimming in around 1m of water and was disturbed when we were wading near it.
Before you ask, no it wasn't a ray or a shovelly. We got a real good look at it and it was definitely a flathead
Have caught several big ones off the bottom of Nth Straddie but many years ago myself and mate youngie caught two just over the meter his was deemed to be bigger because it had part of tail bitten off. That was on the bottom of Sth. Straddie before wave break using white bait.
Vic1 and bam424,they are massive flathead that you caught,if i got 1 near a meter i would be stunned to be honest

Was about to go home on a miserable rainy day on the hastings river, Port Mac NSW when just one more cast of the 3" drop shot minnow on 1/16th jighead (bream gear, 4lb braid, 8lb fluro leader) snagged what I thought must have been a sting ray. As I was about to leave and bored I thought I'd play it out and see if I could get my lure back. Chased it around in the tinny, got it up off the bottom and when I finally got leader got the shock of my life as a shovel-sized dusky head popped out of the dirty water. Managed to boat it, she measured 1.14m and weighed in the net was around 9.5 to 10kg!!! Of course no camera and flat mobile phone, as I was fishing alone no on believes me but what the hey, I was there! Record for the river is 23lb so I guess they're out there. Let her go and she swam off to go back to scaring mullet.
Have got three more over 80cms out of the river so the big duskies are alive and well down here.
