Camping Site Recommendations

Chaps,

Looking to take the family camping on one of the upcoming weekends. There is three of us, me, the missus and my 7 year old daughter.

We will be heading off Friday after school so probably a 2 hour trip from Brisbane (Redlands) is the maximum we are willing to travel. We will be pushing off on Sunday early to arrive home before lunch so we at least have some time at home.

We have a 4wd but are not interested in hardcore 4wding, sand and bush tracks are OK. Some tracks to go exploring on would be nice but not required.

An essential requirement is fishing and swimming.

Being a first trip facilities are somewhat important.

Bush or Beach, I think I would prefer bush with access to estuaries.

Yes I do have the Dirty Weekends in SEQ book, but am looking for some personal experiences. I read all appropriate threads 6 or 7 pages deep also.

Can't beat Maroochydore/Mooloolaba area for camping, beach, river, facilities... all in one area.

Its hard to beat the beach from teewah to double island i reckon, but you miss the estury part. Facilities can be had at freshwater campground. Bribie island has a few spots too, but the facilities are not so flash.

Failing that, I reckon the best spot you could go is north straddie, its got all you require, the only problem is the barge over is a bit pricey ($122 for just the car). IT meets all your requirments!!

What about Noosa North shore eastury and beach.Havn't been there for awhile though.

G'day Brett, are you looking to bush camp as in National Park type stuff or are you thinking along the lines of tourist/Caravan park type affairs?
If its a first time camping - maybe a caravan park could be good - lots of facilities but still camping in the tent. One of my favourite spots is Brunswick Heads, you can camp right on the river - great swimming beach on the river and you can fish river/beach nice area great feed/drinks at the pub, prawns from the co-op on the river go well watching the sun go down with a coldie too mmmmmm must organise a trip soon methinks

In the current conditions I'd be thinking maybe houseboating it, safer if the rain continues

I'd say in light of monsoon rains predicted, mountain camping might be the way to go

At this stage the plan is for night of Friday 14th and Saturday 15th March.
I am thinking of the campsite at the end of Coochin Creek?

Just read about Coochin Creek, it seems open fires are not allowed. I would very much like to be able to burn an open fire.

Booloumba Creek looks like it might be a goer. Might have everything I am looking for, any thoughts?

The Coochin creek area fishes well and the boat ramp is OK. The campground is flat and well maintained.

There are many tracks in the area that will pose no problems to ya 4 x 4. Be aware of black soil and water combos.

Most National Parks are fire free or at least require you to use a Fire ring provided by the park.

Fires on beaches are a no no, and as mentioned above, with all the rain about the estuaries will be chocolate for a while.

There are numerous places to suit your needs just over the border and in particular Fingal Heads.

Straddie! Perhaps no estuaries but many fishing and camping options and open fires allowed on some of the beaches.

Booloumba is a nice spot. Don't think you can fish in the creek there though.

Elanda point at Noosa is a nice spot also. Right on the water at lake cootharaba on the Noosa river and you can have a fire in the communal fire rings provided only. Quick trip accross the ferry and you can hit the beaches of Teewah and Double Island or you can head for the tracks through the cooloola state forest. An absolute plethora of fishing options in this area from rock to beach to estuary and offshore and even some wild bass in the upper noosa river.

If the weather fails you and turns to crap you can always hit the shops and restaurants at Noosa which are just a stones throw away.

Much good advice in this thread, I guess over time I will have to try out all the camping spots suggested.

Is it likely to be very busy on the weekend before Easter?

Another location maybe Wivenhoe Dam (Captain Logan campgrounds)

Doesn't take long to get to. Plenty of Kangaroos around to see, fires allowed and wood supplied, toilets and shower facilities, plenty of fork tailed catfish to be caught in the dam.

Lots of mozzies at coochin and lots of teenage idiots two,brunswick heads is nice along the river there,apart from that its pretty hard to beat straddy or noosa north shore,when its only for a weekend.

The added advantage is that Wivenhoe appears to be the driest place in Australia !!!!!
