Mud and beyond Sat 9th Feb
We left from Whyte Island bright and early and headed over to MUd. Tide was lower than I have ever seen it before. Glad I had the patrol which made light work of pulling the enpty trailer up the drop off.
Got to Mud before sun up, and all was quite, although there was action on the sounder. Wasnt long before the fish started coming abourd. Cod, grassy sweetlip and stripeys. All undersize except for 2 grassy sweetlip that Wanda caught. I caught a decent size grinner, which was our bait for a few hours. Not bad for bait the old grinner
Things started to slow down so we went for a run over to the Curtin Artifical reef. Stopped on the way over to see some Tuna going hard, but they were to quick for us, and we didnt have the right gear anyway.
Got over to the artifical reff (1st time) and the current was going really fast. Got a undersize squire, then I got a fish that made the drag scream and the poor old JV bend in 1/2, then it went all loose... must have been swimming towards me, then it was on again. I was hoping for dinner, but it ended up being a ray, which we let go.
There was a shark cat moored near us. I heard their drag scream its head off, I looked over to see a bird flying away with their luse/(small fish they caught ?) in its claws. The reel was screaming and the bird was flapping effortlessly. It let go after about 30m. no more fish, so back to Tanga so the girls could go for a snorkel and back home.
Nice day on the water. A bit lumpy in places due to the many large ships in the channel, but otherwise it was all good.
