does anyone know why they have started selling these again with a derated 2.5l engine along side the D40?

Hi Eric,
I'm not sure what you mean by derated. The YD25 motor in the latest D40 Navara offers more power and torque than the older generation ZD30 motor used in the D22 Navara.
At present, Nissan dont offer a single cab ute in either 2 or 4WD. That could be one reason behind the re-introduction of the D22 ( at least in single-cab ) anyway.
Admittadly, the addition of the 2.5 litre TD to an up-dated D22 Navara came as a surprise to me - if I'd known 12 months ago I might of held of buying my current Navara
.
Nissan Wants To Secure A Section Of The Market They Haven't Been In Since Sept Last Year. Competitive Prices And An Expanded Model Range.
They Will Complement The D40 Range, Not Sell Against Them.
Cheers, Geoff
MAY THE FISH BE WITH YOU!
The YD25 motor in the D22 puts out 98KW. My ZD30 is 110Kw and the D40 supposedly puts out 125Kw from it's 2.5L motor.
Hard to guess the logic behind it.
You will probably find the D22 is South African produced and they have excessive numbers or the vehicle will be sold at a cheaper price compared to the 40. When I was over there (not 5 years ago) they still produced the old dato 1200 utes, The plant over there is renowned worldwide for the quality of product it produces as well as huge production numbers when compared to countries like Japan, USA.

The 2008 D22 is built is Japan, my guess is that a D22 with the 3L engine would take sales away from the D40.
Having the older D22 body with a derated D40 engine body enables Nissan to have a cheaper car available and a larger range to compete with the cheaper 4x4 dual cabs. Some of the reports do seem to say that the D22 is more capable off-road than the the D40?
G'day,
I think Nissan is holding on to the D22 because its a 1 tonne ute - a tradies ute or FBT beater. The D40 is pretty heavy and only rated at around 700kg.

Nissan are selling both because of market share. They have different niches to fill and the sales figures are all for a "navara". They only stopped importing the d22 due to euro 4 compliance. Hence the new motor.
The vehicles are intended for different roles. The d4o is more "station wagon" in it's ride and comfort. The d22 is intended as a straight out workhorse with better payload. It lacks the ride quality of the d40 but is superior for off road use.

In response to one of the posts above about the confusion in the two engines. The explanation is a simple one.
They detuned the d22 2.5 ltr so as not to compete head to head on power with the d4o. The d40 is also a heavier vehicle so needs more torque.
