My wife Tracey and I headed to Toorbul for a quick fish while the kids were at school. We were really looking forward to it because we had caught some nice grunter on Australia Day in one of the creeks up there and now without kids to whinge we could relax and have a decent shot at them again.
Last time we fished the top of the tide, so today's times were perfect, but a nagging concerned about all the rain over the last couple of days turned into full on pessimism as we crossed the Pine River and saw the colour of the water and the amount of debris.
Got to Toorbul, drop the pots and headed to our spot. Nothing - not even a touch. Moved a couple of times for the same result. Decided to move towards the mouth and drift a bit, I had started on plastics but changed to worms like Tracey as I figured bait was better in the dirty water. First cast on worms and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz at the same time from Tracey zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz - two undersized grunter - they pull hard for their size.
We anchored up and boated another half a dozen undersized grunters in the 20 to 28cm range and a couple of smaller tarwhines and bream. Good fun but very disappointing not to get a keeper. Moved into the passage to see if we could find bigger fish in the deeper saltier water - no luck and with wind against tide very unpleasant. Decided to pull the pin and get the pots.
first pot, nothing,
second pot, nothing,
third pot, nothing,
forth pot, four bucks - two of them to become crab sandwiches.
Better than nothing, but I was surprised at the taste and texture of the grunters last time and was really looking forward to having them again.
Hope the water clears up for all of you who are sure to head out there on the weekend.

Too right with the grunter. They are a great feed. Completely under-rated by some. If you manage to pick one up between 1.5 t0 2 kg, you get good sized, bloody delicious fillets.
you probably passed me a few times in your travels mate,,,, i had the tinny in the water for the run up from 7 ish this morning,,,, but i camped around the mouth of ningi creek and some fun with perch,,,squire and a few shovelies
the boys had the big boat outside and managed a couple of nice cod,,, but when that mid morning wind picked up,,, it had them heading back to see what i was up too,,
ironed out a problem with the motor,,, checked the dillies and like yourself,,, a bucket of undersize,,, and only a few legals,,,
for those of you who are heading out tomorrow,,, be warned,,, we have a couple of fishing clubs on the island with a small fleet of boats that are going to be terrorizing most of the passage tomorrow,,,, expect a busy time around the ramps
