Just looking at this

Dont get carried away with pixels ,you can have as many pixels as you want but its no good if you have cr#p software to read whats under the boat , GO THE fURUNO just my opinion ...matt
A bad days fishing has got to be better than any day at work......
I have the Raymarine DS500X. Its a great unit but be wary of buying it from the US as the US version doesn't display depth in metres (only fathoms and feet). I'm kinda regretting it a little because I'm used to metres, and tempted to upgrade to the Furuno just for that reason (plus I saw the Furuno in the store and the bigger screen really appeals).
See if you can get a copy of 'Depth Sounder Secrets' by Rick Huckstepp.
It may at the least give you more knowledge and confusion on how to base you decision!!
see if you can get a look at both units in operation at a dealership.
Used to have a furuno fcv 620... great unit... upgraded to the bigger 585 but tripple the 620

Agree entirely, well almost. The transducer is the most important thing of your setup. Once you have got that covered the more pixels you have the better the picture you will have. You can see so many more things with a finer picture. I have just replaced an old koden sounder with a furuno 620, they had the same transducer but the picture was not even comparable, due to the number of pixels.

One question dual frequency transducer or single cheers
Dual frequency is much better in deep water as the narrow beam will give you a much better indication of what is directly underneath your boat.

Hey JoeT, my ds500x that i just got from Fishon allowed me to change the depths to metres so they must have installed an update or something recently.

Have a read in the latest Club Marine Magazine, there is a very good article on sounders and all the associated jargon that goes with them in it.

What could go wrong.......................
Yes kezza i do agree with the transducer thing but failed to mention it as the airmar duel frequency comes standard with the furuno ...matt
