    Reprop Yamaha 60 4 st

    Hi Ausfishers,

Looking at moving from std 13p to 11-3/8" 12p. Often have family on board, bimini and clears creat a bit of drag also. Cruises at 18-20 knots @4000-4200. Max rpm with load about 5400-5500. WOT range spec is 5000-6000

Think the 12p would help getting out of the hole a bit quicker with a load.

What is the benefit of Solas or Merc props over Yamaha, and ss over Aluminium.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Cheers - Fred

I don't understand these small diameter props on 4 strokes very well but would guess you are on the right track, try not to decrease the diameter if you will be carrying a fair load though, the 12p in the same diameter if available will make a difference in the direction you want, the standard Yam props are ok for fishing rigs.

SS performance unless a person spends the time to dial it in well can be achieved by ad hock selection of an ally props very often. Those yam props are only $250? ask about being allowed to bring it back to try others before you settle, I know the yam dealer here does that.

Something you could try is take it to a prop bloke and get the cup taken out (this only runs interfearance on slow fishing rigs), that will get you better performance and some extra rpm, no idea how much, then if not happy get 0.5 of an inch pitch taken out, think you might be happier with this outcome overall than simply going down 1 inch in Pitch.

    good luck

    cheers fnq

    Thanks FNQ,

Spoke to Solas today and they were very helpful. They said that they prop the 60 4 st to run @ 5750 WOT and that the 12p would be spot on. The Solas has a little more cup than the std yamaha prop - that gives it better grip. The diameter increases slightly over the 13p 11-1/8" up to 11-3/8"

The 13 thats on the motor now was dinged a bit by the previous owner and has been repaired so that will be my emergency spare.

    Thanks again - Fred

Re: Reprop Yamaha 60 4 st

    Hi Fred,

    I have a F60 4str on a Quintrex and was running a 11 5/8 x 11. Problem was my engine was over revving at WOT 6000 - 6100.

I consulted Yamaha regard what choices I had and explored the SS option. They offered that the benefits of a SS are marginal on a 60 4str unless your constantly skiing etc and need the pull. The higher 4 str engines come standard with the SS prop as the Torque generated requires a stiffer prop. In addition, cost was a big driver, aluminium vs SS - 1/2 the price. We use the boat for putting around and feeding the local fish population so don't need to do that real fast - I have a on-board speed limiter called the Mrs.

As "odd luck had it" I clipped an object underwater and dinged one blade of my Aluminium prop so replaced this with a Yamaha 11 3/8 x 12. I now get 5800 - 5900 at WOT and a few kts at the top end. Out of the hole performance for me appears much the same.

There's a sunken wreck in the Pine River with an extra ding in it now !

The benefits of an alumium prop came to the fore as according to the shop I had the prop changed at if I had a SS prop on i'd probaly have done some gearbox damage and / or bent the prop shaft.

Being new to boating I figure I haven't finished hitting stuff yet so glad to go back to an aluminium prop.

    Hope it helps.

    Regards,

    Rob

    Thanks Rob,

The Solas that I am looking at is their aluminium offering not SS. No point in SS for what I do and you're dead right about limiting lower unit damage using an alloy prop. Really just want optimum performance and a spare. Seems the 12p will do the trick.

Its amazing how much windage a highish bimini with clears generate. I remember when I took the boat for a test run with no bimini or clears and two bods, 1/2 tank fuel and ran 5800 WOT on the 13p prop.

    Solas - $245 Yamaha - $194 is it worth the extra $50???

Fred no it's not worth the extra $50, not even worth paying less than for the Yam prop IMO, the extra cup simply robs the engines efficiency on our rigs and gives nothing of value back in comparison, now if you could travel fast enough to get a lot of the hull out of the water the cup may help but then you would be opting for a true performance prop with lot's of rake and it would be cupped to suit.

    good luck
