Hi all - just read on the EPA's website that the Hook Pt area and up at the Maheno have been declared 'Shared Zones' and a speed limit of 40km/h........
Shared zones
Three sections of the eastern beach have been declared pedestrian and vehicle shared zones, to help protect a significant roosting area for migratory and resident shorebirds and to enhance visitor safety. The areas include:
• Two zones on the beach between Hook Point and Dilli Village
• A zone in the vicinity of the Maheno shipwreck.
All vehicles must obey the maximum speed limit of 40 km/h while driving through these zones and to ‘slow down and go around’ all shorebirds.
An alternative route at the southern end of the beach is the 50 km/h inland road.
They must have bitumened that inland road if you can do 50ks on it.
What retard comes up with this crud?
I can understand people getting run over but I think the birds are smarter than that. They are certainly not going too just sit there on the beach while you slow down and go around them.
I have never seen a dead bird there, and I would say nor has the dick that came up with this one.
Actually I used the inland road on the long weekend and while it was corrugated fairly badly in spots, 60-70kph was fine. Not that I would actually do that speed when the limit is 50kph
A 40kph limit is probably better than no access at all around hook point. And because of the crowds at the maheno you usually have to do 40kph or less anyway.
