The first of the batch of Jewie lures mentioned in the recent 'Rattles' post are ready for painting.
Does anyone have any favourite or successful colour schemes? Was thinking of doing some the classic red head, white body as well as some with green back, white belly and red belly freckles. The latter to mimic a severely stressed mullet on its last legs (or fins).
Not sure if colour makes a lot of differnce to the jew the humble white feather accounts for a lot if fish.
Having said that one of my favourites is the bleeding mullet type pattern. I paint my own using white underbelly with a dark brown or black back. If you cut out a template usng cardboard you can overspray the stripes on the side.
I have a mate thats a pretty good jew fisherman fullstop. He uses predominantly macadamia/cream underbelly with a flouro orange back..why? so he can see the lure as it gets close to the rocks in the flood water!
Another trick he taught me was to get an estimate of where you need to be pullng the lure out of the water before it hits rocks. (usually before it gets dark). Put a kink in the line at that point. Then every time you wind your lure in the kink runs over top of your finger and you know you need to be ready to pick up the lure.
Thanks for that! Particularly the tip about the fluoro back.
Will make up a few like that and give them a try. One or two of the "naturals" that I've painted up mimic the mullet's natural camouflage so well that they are a bugger to see!
Any photos? In a day or two I might be able to "show you mine if you show me yours", so to speak.
