There you go folks, you now have the knowledge. The rest is up to you. I'm sure 90% of this info would also relate to Monduran fishing too.

Make it a sticky please mods..

Thanks Jas, its the best post I have read full stop.

Thanks for the words you share and the passion you have for the place Jas. Having been involved in local Barrra stocking for many years, I hear what you are saying about courtesy & crowds etc. We stock the waters to enhance our lifestyles and we don't mind sharing, but it is sad that some like to take without having a little respect for others and the fishery.
It's a shame that every fisho doesn't report every trip. We only seem to report our successes but not our failures. This results in every man & his dog turning up on the dam expecting to "fill the boat" or at least, the camera. (how many Barra pics does one need??? Better to take a couple and leave the rest of the fish in the water for release if on a good bite.)
Awoonga is not the holy grail, but it is a nice place to hang out when one has the time, and you just might catch a barra or two if things go your way.

Thanks for a great post Jas. I'll be up there for my second trip in late March for two weeks, but I am getting VERY nervous about the state of the ramp. I have a heavy Skeeter and drive a commodore station wagon - is one side of the ramp any better than the other? Any talk of extending the ramp?
    Thanks again Jas.

Thanks everyone who posted for your positive reponse, it is appreciated.

Lyndon, there is whispers about a new ramp/improvements. I dont know about it though.
Wakd, I'd be pretty suss mate with the big skeeter, I have to select 4wd to get my skeet out.
Steve, yeh lots of similar rules apply for sure mate.
Waggy, agree with your comments too.
    Once again thank you all.
    Cheers

    jas/everyone
i know where the frustration of the ramp condition is coming from. the only improvements that will be taking place in the near future will be maintenance to the drop off beyond the concrete. it has been raised as an issue and i recognise everyones concerns. again it is beyond my control but again, everyone, please forward your concerns and it will present a case. for all readers i only fish the dam only on rare occasions (when the bream are off), please take it easy on this ramp and hold a little patience. this is a ramp with limited access for such a busy impoundment, but everyone is in the same boat (pardon the pun). the last time i attempted to visit one of my babies out there, a fellow fishermen (not mentioning the number plate - not a NSW) had the hide to back down on a boat being loaded and aggressively questioning his actions allowing no room for exit. i know this guy must have either been dropped on his head at birth, or just born with one chromosome short, as he moved in the dark to go old mate. nothing eventuated due to a few other mates stepped in and let the wrong party know who was right and wrong. this has been, and will be continuing issue, so enoughof the macho shyt and behave yourselves. after all its a free fishery.

    cheers

Re: Lake Awoonga UPDATE 1st FEB

Your advice is worth bottling Jas.....your thoughts here should be a companion guide (Lonely Planet - Awoonga style for any angler/boater visiting this great lake (and others).

There is loads to take on board from what you have posted.....and for me, it is not so much about the "How To's" - that comes from putting in big time on the water, listening to others who know their sh*t and being prepared to learn new things.

For me, it is 90% attitude........
    • A positive attitude towards your tackle preparation (not accepting that close enough is good enough)
    • An attitude espousing patience, tolerance, courtesy and respect for self and fellow anglers on the water
    • An attitude of confidence/optimism that you will enjoy success, or an attitude to learn from the tough days to do better next time; and
    • An attitude that you take a smile on board when you launch and a determination you will have the same smile or broader when you return, no matter what your results.
At the end of the day, I do not go out fishing to be a misery guts (I can do that at work, wishing I was fishing)....I am always committed to having fun, bettering myself as an angler, enjoying the moment for what it really is, and of course, taking the p*ss out of my mates (expecting heaps in return).

Smile when you net your quarry, and smile when you afford him his liberty........leave your problems at home and take the right attitude on the water......how hard can that be?

    Cheers and happy fishing

    Paul

    Jas,

It's comments, advice and posts like that, from the likes of yourself, Harro, and many others here, and also in magazines etc that benefit us all and help us to gain a better understanding of dams and the possible fishing metality that needs to be practised. I for one have really appreciated the threads that writers take the time to post, as I know how long they can take (especially when they dissapear????) I have gained a greater understanding of many facets since joining this site, not only fishing techniques, but the power of a positive mind and a thoughtful attitude towards others whilst spending time on the water.

    Thanks Jas

    Matt

Positive attitudes see positive results, thats for sure!

    Lol Jas

Our rod abusing mate didn't manage to shorten any sticks at Monduran a few weeks back, but his brother is now getting in on the act........he suffers from acute "too loose grip" syndrome and has them ripped out of his hands.....catties will do that to ya

As for Navi, he told me he is working on a new blank design.....SS 316 composite is the model Try and break that! Very slow taper though.

    Cheers

Not nice boys, I was purely testing the structural integrity of the timber at Monduran – it passed Besides Jas, after Vin lost his rod and reel overboard, I nearly called it for a ‘Wilhelm Spill ‘em’ after seeing your effort at the Awoonga ABT- at least Vin had a fish on when he lost his .

Jas, I think we are definitely approaching our impoundment fishing differently to our estuary fishing and not just searching for knarly looking structure!

It is hard being a ‘visitor’ to try and work out where to fish but as you say, everyday is different. I now find myself focusing on where bait may/is congregating rather than looking for barra spots. As you and Joe have said to me, barra are not territorial and will be where the food source is. Finding bait is still a huge challenge but this is all part of the hunt and continues learning curve that keeps our fishing interesting. We’d probably get bored if we could go out every session and dong a dozen on the head so the reward is so much greater when you do.

Thanks for sharing some of your knowledge and experience with us – as Paul (the grog monster) would say, it’s as good as gold – just not as good as XXXX Gold .
