    Cape York Land Based options

    Hi guys,

I am new to the forum after getting back into fishing recently. Been having a ball discovering how much fun fishing with soft plastics can be. Anyway I am heading up cape york for the month of July with a mate in a fullly decked out 100 series cruiser and was after some advice on where we can fish without a boat. Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks Ben

If you go to Weipa, there are a few land based options well worth a shot, there is the jetty, the rocky point boat ramp is worth a go, a mate got a metre plus barra there, also under the mission river bridge you can get barra, threadfin, cod, trevally, queenies, jewies etc.

I caught fish in Wiepa at the northern boat ramp as well as the jetty. Jetty is good at night. Try asking the question over here as well :

advice - sit on the roof of your car while fishing, just in case there are any floating handbags cruising around.

Do you mean outside fishing ?? If you are talking a charter you need to book before you get there. They are booked up pretty good. In any evcent - ask the questions on that other site I liked. They are the absolute Cape York gurus.

A few years ago we stayed at a place called Pennefather River mouth. Landbased fishing was excellent. It is north of Weipa couple of hours I think. The mouth of the river has some good fish. Watch out for the flat dogs though there are heaps.

Ther are some rocks higher out of the water where we had a ball catching Queenies, threadies and big Trevs.
It is a good spot to camp, shady trees and the fishing good.
    Have fun mate.

If u r going to the top do not pass Punsand Bay. Has been a couple of yrs since i was ther but the camping ground was AAA+ and u r right on the water. The fishing was great, basically out the front of yr camp site, toss the cast net, and bait up. It is right at the top, and the trip is well worth it. Seisia, just south, is another good spot just fishing off the shore. The wharf is a hot spot. If u have the chance...go.
Jardine R. crossing....well that is another conundrum....just take your wallet.
