    In Close In The Rough

Thought with a few storms passing through Tuesday, Wednesday might be ok. Nope. Shoulda listed to the forecasts. They were right. Had squalls all morning then once they moved on we had a constent 20knots of East. Maybe dropped out to 15knots late. Just sick of sitting around and keen to get a feel for the place again and work out what is going on.

Tracked down Fadil and Phil T who were keen no matter what. Late start of 6:00 at the ramp was the go. We were only going to play around in close checking out a few leads of a where a few fish were suppossed to be. Not gung-ho at all. Things were grim early with a legal Sweetlip and a few u/s Squire on the SPs. Jigged some bait on some great scattered shows and cast to some Tuna schools resulting in a couple of chunky Stripies so we were ready to go then with quality bait. Had a troll looking around at a few marks.

Fadil had brought a bit of bottom bashing gear and bait with him but it was always going to be pretty much a soft plastics morning. I thought I had better put the pick down and give the best show a go for him. Glad we did. They were on straight away. All fish were 66-80cm. Poor Phil reverted to his old form and got seasick again. He missed the bite lieing on the bunks only reeling one in, his new PB and getting busted up by another one. He had to make do with a trolling outfit. Fadil smashed them on the other side of the boat on a bottom bouncer. 4 from 4 drops at the start. Drop to the bottom and you were on straight away. You had to coax em a bit later or use a livey after the intial flurry. Filled the 85 Evakool just with Snapper.

No Rapalas in that pic. A Laser Pro and a Lively Lures Blue Pilly. Jumped a Mahi Mahi off was all. Not much of a minnow man these days but they are good brands along with Lively Lures Mack Baits. In Mack Baits the Blue Bonito colour works a treat. The two lures in the pic in those colours are also gun. Was targetting Yellowfin for Phil was the reason for them. I mostly troll skirts or Gar these days for a higher incidence of Billfish.
