    Fish ID

    Hey guys, need a little help with the ID of this fish. It smashed a 120mm halco laser pro in white with a red head, and pulled reall hard for it's size (50cm). it bricked me twice, i had to back the pressure off so it would swim out. also got a bigeye trevally that went 58cm. Wind was blowing around 25 - 30 knots all night.

    blubberlip, painted sweetlip, netted mowong, call em what you like they arent much good for anything except the fight.Was it kept?

    slatey Bream, Blackall, mother -in-law fish (beause you give em to your mother in law) are another couple of names for it. Not the best eating, though I reckon it hints towards a flatty in flavour but nowhere near as good......They certainly do hit hard and put up a good fight though.

    thanks for the replies guys, yes it was kept, but i don't think i'll eat it after what has been said of their eating qualities.(i'll give it away to the neighbours). but i will definately be chasing them again, really great fight they could pull an equally sized jack backwards.

    Don't knock the taste until you try it. It doesn't taste foul or anything like that, just not as good as other species, depending on what your tastes are, you might like it, don't let 2 or 3 opinion from other people (including me in this case) dictate on what you will and won't eat.

    i think i cooked up a mother-in-law (morwong) once.. the flesh was thick but dry (not because of my cooking abilities).

    i think if cooked a different way, maybe whole on the bbq in foil it would be ok.

    fish cake fish!!!!!! ( well thats what I call them )
    cook whole, pull all the flesh off with a fork and mix with mashed potato, egg, diced carrot onion ect make into patties and fry.

    Another old recipe for this fish species (but a good one) is as follows:

    1. Fillet fish;
    2. Collect large round river rock, wash clean;
    3. Place fillets and river rock in large pot of boiling water;
    4. Cook for 3 days on high;
    5. Discard water and fillets.
    6. Eat rock.

    good to eat if bleed straight away filleted and skined and cooked in garlic and butter

    Scott has it right, TRY it first, most people whinge about certain fish and reckon they are crap, but have never actually eaten one! it was only a few years ago that Kingfish was almost unmarketable, now they are $15 a kilo whole! so at least give it a try, then decide for yourself.

    why would you keep something if you dont know what it is.
    it could be a protected species or poisoness. best to take a pic and release them.
    better to be on the safe side

    because my fishing buddy called it for a slatey. he was 100% sure i just wanted confermation.
