Its a netted morwong.it is not poisonous.
I've actually found them to be delicious! Cooked up in butter and lemon juice in alfoil they are sensational. Like a lot of fish that get a bad rap you have to try them first. I'll admit I was a little doubtful myself
20 years ago people would turn their nose up at "Cockies" (Venus tusk fish) and now they are considered a great eating fish.

I've had these before, they are ok to eat. Caught the largest one in Hervey Bay 3 years back, went close to 6kg. Someone told me to take it the annual fish comp weigh in at the time, ( I was not aware it was on), they weighed it, and said it was biggest and could win the daily prize if I was a member. I said nope, I'm not a member, I was told they could sign me up on the spot for $25.00 + supply a photo ID, (like I'd carry spare photo in my wallet).
I said thanks but no thanks, took it home and cooked it up. Not the best eating fish, I had better and also worse. Peter
The bad taste is due to the environment in which they live. generally they will come off a weedy bottom or feed off weed. I caught one a while ago around noosa headland. It came of a sandy clean bottom and was very nice on the plate, very sweet flesh.

Whlst on the subject of dubious tasting fish-
No one here has mentioned fish curry!
Any fish that you think may not taste good on their own, put them into a nice curry base, add a bed of fresh steamed rice with a nice tomato chutney YUM!!
Curry base-
6 tablespoons of Clive of India curry (Substitute 3 for Keens Red if you can handle a bvit of spice, if you like a ringburner go 6 Keen red box)
1 tin of tomato
1 onion, garlic, ginger, salt to taste
Fry up onion, garlic and ginger till onion is translucent
throw the tin tomato in and stir for a few minutes
slam the curry powder in and stir again
throw fish in either whole or filleted (Flesh falls off easily anyway)
simmer for 20 odd minutes or until fish cooked through
boil up some rice
cut up a tomato and add some lemon juice
And the most important ingredient- ice cold beer-the best condiment of all
voila, i defy anyone who likes curry and fish to be dissapointed
greta for slateys, doggy's, or any other fish not up to the task
good eating guys
cheers
your mate was 100% wrong, it is not a slatey, like jeffo said it is a painted sweetlip, enjoy.
Thanks for all the feed back guys, that was the last fish i've caught, haven't been able to buy a bite. going to try and turn that around on tuesday, fingers crossed.
