Fun morning
WOW!
I had such a ball this morning. I was going to head out to cape cleveland but made a change and headed to orchid rocks. I got there about 2 hrs before low tide and droped my squid bait down. Hardly hit the bottom and bang fingermark on first bait yes, second bait another finger mark, Third bait a good grunter fourth a nice big grassy. I couldnt believe it i was trying to get a floating rigg in the water because there was heaps of bait and some big swirls around. after i got the floating rig out i went back to the bottom fishing as i was dropping the bait i got hit by a mack truck, it was touch and go for a bit but eventually boated a big GT when i say big i mean big i have 30pd braid on a curado reel with an ian miller stickand boy did i get a work out. Caught a few rays and then i think that i hooked a nuclear sub which spooled my bait caster(bugger) so resorted to the handline caught big mobs of undersize smallmouth and some small raysgot some longspine snapper first time i have got them. had enough about 8 am and trolled a lure back through the channel markers but no luck. I had a great morning and i am just trying to talk the cook into letting me out in the morning for a run to the Cape.

Re: Fun morning
Sounds like you had a much better day than me....good effort. I was only 2 hrs behind you, but went to bayrock instead, for not much, found some good spots though that should produce at different times than we fished them. How good was the weather today??, wind didn't start until about 2pm, when I headed in, but even then it was only around 7knts.

Re: Fun morning
Great read.
Now I'm really p!ssed I didn't head out at 4am like I planned. AND I'm not organised for an early start tomorrow either.
GRRR.
Them the breaks I guess...
Well done horseboy - the good thing about Orchid Rocks is its the only decent spot where you get good, deep water close to the island. I measured it the other day at 20m which is astounding considering 11m is as deep as it gets elsewhere. Dropped some squid down there a few weeks ago for not even a toadie.
Cheers!!

Re: Fun morning
The weather was awesome if i had an epirb would have headed out to one of the reefs. Not going out in the morning and looks like i wont get out next break. going in to get skin cancers cut out once i get of the plane. But my wife is trying to organise a family day on a mates charter boat up lucinda for my bday if the weather is good over the weekend of the 10th not to strenious aircon dvd etc might be the way to get my dream boat taking her out on that. but as i said had a ball this morning i wasnt sure if i was going till bout 8 lastnight so i didnt post for a crewmate wish i had of as days like today should be shared. Scott have found the last of the out going tide is the better time for around the island an middle reef specially if it is early as there is not to many people are out then so you can get reel fussy where you anchor.

Re: Fun morning
Thanks for rubbing it in Horseboy, I had to work both Saturday and Sunday, looked at the bureau reports with envy and as usual when I get time off, the weather will be back to crap again. But at least you had a good day on the water and yes it definitely beats working (lucky bugger). If this type of weather keeps up, the barra season and not to mention the reef are going to go ballistic this year.
Good Report and keep up the fishing.
Hope Lucinda fires up for you, if you get up there...
