Saltist in 40 size if going overhead,no need to get the high speed unless you are going to do a lot in over a hundred metres and if going spin the only one I'd consider for the money you want to spend is the Spheros 14000 with upgrade 'B'.
Hi
I want to go deep water jigging (typically 30-50m). Which reel should I get.
I want to spend about $300. Now I know that if I spend $1,000 then I will get a reel that will last a lot longer, but I just want to see if I like it first before I fork out the big bucks.
Here's how I see it:
Overhead is better than Threadline because -
Reel is higher, so less likely to hit side of boat (my boat has high sides)
For medium priced reels, overheads are stronger than threadlines
Just feels better fighting a fish on an overhead
Overhead canditates would include Shimano Torium, Diawa Saltist which are both fairly high speed reels, which seems to be important.
Threadlines are better than overheads because -
Reel will lay on line (not many overheads in this range include level wind)
Faster drop and no backlash (will be fishing 50m, so good to get jig down fast)
Threadlines are generally lighter than overheads.
Threadline canditates include Diawa Emblem, and maybe Penn 8500SS.
I just think for what I want to spend, the overheads are stonger, but I'm not sure that I will be able to get the lures down as fast, so the amount of actual fish time is limited and manually laying the line is going to be a pain.
Any thoughts about which reel to get.

Hi
Thanks for the info
So you don't need high speed to make the jigs more attractive to the fish
Whichway
No you definately don't need a high retrieve ratio for jigging, the only time a high speed reel would be an advantage is in water where you have droped to a depth that has seriously reduced the line left on the reel,in this scenario the high speed will up the pickup rate with the small arbor diameter, the retrieve ratio of the standard Saltist is prety much spot on out to 100 metres.Jig action is very much detirmened by a combination of rod type and the individuals own technique, the reel simply catches the line in between rod strokes.
Got he threadie mate les to worry about. Jigging needs the jig up as fast as possible.

For 300 bucks check out the Okuma VS 80 I have one and use it for jigging and have had no dramas at all. Mind you I don't constantly jig with it and It is not a Top of the line diawa or Shimano but I figure I can Buy 3 or 4 these to a similar sized Stella or Dogfight.

G'day W/W
i have found jigging with an overhead tends to really hurt the wrist over time, as the weight of the reel always wants to twist around (gravity) but thats me, maybe im doing something wrong,

G'day whichway, i was going to post the same question but i see you beat me to it.
I too am looking at buying a jigging setup and i thought about going the Shimano Tyrnos. I am led to beleive you should have a reel with a higher speed ratio but i am not to sure, hopefully get some feedback from the other members.
Hey whichway,
Mate I would say definetly go threadline as they are easier to jig with.
In your price range you would consider a Spheros but before you buy Shimano have a new spheros coming out with a pretty serious drag of 44lb.
Not sure when they are coming but check it out.

Hi
Thanks for the replies.
What is upgrade B to the Spheros
Whichway
The standard Spheros carries a plastic bush on one side of the main gear, with the upgraded B version you get that replaced with a bearing and you get a carbon fiber drag, this upgrade is done by Shimano in Sydney, there is also another level of upgrade that also includes a Stella handle along with the bearing and drag.
