Today i went out with Chief to have ago a some river bream and hopfully a squire. The day started slow as we didn't get any squire at one of the many spots around the river for squire so after about 45minutes we decided to have a go at some bream at " Big Red" first cast i was on with a little 26.5 cm tacker. We fished there for about 1.5 hours and scored 4 bream and a pike to 32cm. They were caught on a variety of plastics from powerbaits to gulp!'s to Squidgy pro range critters. There was a fair bit of run so we ended up fishing a 1/16 heads. We than decided to go further to the mouth and have another go at some squire we were dissapointed when the wind picked up to atleast 20knots. We didn't manage any other squire or bream for that matter, chief was the only one to raise a scale with a tiny cod. So we went back the spot we triedto hook some squire. It started with me hooking up to a fish on the squire rig with a 4inch placcie with a 3/8 head i though i had my first squire on a placcie but it was a huge bream easily 40cm or over but it decided to take one last run and sat the hooks there goes wahat would have been my new pb. Well it wasn't long after that chief hooked a better bream at 35cm plus another taddler. So we decided to end the squire segment of our day and hit some bream up in the last half hour i managed another alright bream at 30cm. It was definatley a hard days fishing with the wind playing it's part. I have to say Chief has a nice little rig and cheers for taking me
Good onya chris. Sounds like it was a bit of hard work but you scored a few nice ones. Champion effort chief taking the young bloke out and getting him onto a few. Ben
Hey nice report Chris, and it was a shocker of a day on the river with some real bone shaking waves on a stiff breeze on a run out tide.at one stage I had the electric on full and we were loosing ground on holding a position against the wind. But we kept plugging away for a few fish. This young bloke travels 1 1/2 to 2 hrs each way to fish around wynnum or cleveland,Hows that for dedication. You can understand why I wanted to get Chris on to a solid river squire but I think they must have been sulking today so I was very disapointed for the champ. But gee he came close to a P.B. bream that any of us would have been proud of.Its hard to say how big this bream really was but over 42 is a cant lose bet. I was amazed when i saw this fish before it made its last run for freedom and it was a corker. Best bream i've seen in a long time. Champion effort mate and well done
Thanks Chief i had a ball mate. I was so close to that awsome breambo! If the whether had of bee sweet we would have cleaned up. ( Hopefully on squire). We will have to give it ago somtim ona better day once i start my apprenticeship. Thanks for taking me out.
As a squire fisherman myself i havnt even taken a hit from the pinkys while all this fresh water has come down river and out to sea and all that weed at the mouth is unbearable so if you pulled one i would of been very surprised. Having said that i think chief might have spent a lot more time in the river and have some tricky little spots. A nice brim if you get it on board. what leader were you using for the brim in the mercky water ?. I pulled in a 40cm at peel but i was using a 20 pound leader with a large hardbody and she wasnt getting of so i cheated on mine. Good on yah chief for getting the young fella onto the calm flat river. I hope my 46 pound leccy will hold my boat in position for long enough.
Hi dobson, my leckie is 55 bl on a 4.3 m but that wind was howling and it was working hard. I'd say we had just under the 1m sharp wind swell under the gateway.I saw one bloke in a 15 ft half cab turn around and head back towards Colmslie as he was getting a pounding.I find the squire tend to go quiet with a good fresh but friday the water looked good. we really were just a little late and missed the prime time for squire but young chris got here as soon as it was physically possible, catching 2 trains and getting to brissie. There is still a few squire being caught around the wharves, just have to be there at the right times
Yes Chris , Went out for a sesh sat. morn but we were hit with that wind again Straight up and found it very hard going. Auto pilot on the leckie played up and we couldn't keep any position . Bad connection again eventually got it sorted so we fished for Bream around the walls. Caught about 8 bream and 1 cod. Still pretty quiet tho. Wasn't to impressed after doing it hard on friday so we were quick to throw in the towel and head home early.
I must have missed you chief i was out on the wall catchin sfa in a fairly good chop angainst the rocks. Had some quick casts against the warves but no touch. I can hang around the warves longer once the leccy is fitted.
Dobson, Put in at aquarium passage and fished up around the river walls at lytton( big red, chris) on saturday but the wind was just crap. Thought it was going to be a lot better than friday. Bugger ,I only went saturday because I couldn;t sunday. I knew today was going to be the better day but i had family commitments.Mate did you fish the walls out past the wharves?
MMMM... it seems this wind of late has made fishing the river pretty difficult. ( Especialley in the spots for squire) Hopefully we will get out one day when the wind isn't so bad.
