As the weather looked OK, decided to take the wife, kids x2 and dog for a fish at the mouth of the Caboolture River to chase some whiting on live worms.
I figured I wouldn't get much of a chance for a flick myself, between baiting hooks, removing fish, tangles and stepping on the dog (the boats only 14") but I was still obsessed with BreamNut's haul on HB's and with a VX40 now in my possession (hope the wife doesn't find out what I paid) I decided that a sandy bank was a good spot to at least try it out with minimal risk of losing it to a snag on the first cast.
Launched at Uhlmann Rd, which must be the worst ramp in the SE, and I should have known the day would be a wash when I managed to hook my sleeve on the VX40 hopping onboard. Those trebbles are sharp and faced with a boat drifting and me caught good and proper, decided it was best to cut off the lure and untangle myself later. Half and hour later after anchoring up, baiting everyone and casting out for the kids and the lure was so embedded in my shirt that it would need to cut off the barbs or the shirt to free it.
We had anchored on the bank on the southern side of the mouth and the kids were pulling undersized whiting one after the other which was fun, but the chop and the wind became a problem so we moved into the shelter of the river. Final tally was around 15 undersized fish (mostly bream after we moved) and one keeper bream at 25cm to my wife.
As for me, my sleeve caught just about everything it came across, hats, towels, my son, car interior. With hooks that sharp can't wait to get it into the water.
No, but it definitely needs it. The slope of this ramp is so shallow that at high tide everyone goes in over the bank and the rest of the time you have to jack-knife your trailer on purpose over the edge to find any water. The staging area is dirt.
Makes the "ramp courtesy" thread a bit of a joke when everyone takes up two lanes - funny thing is I'va always found people there are very patient and helpful.
At least it kept the wife and kids happy. There is nothing like it when you aren't catching any fish and they start to complain. I t's about then you know your fishing trip is just about over.
