Despite the majority seeming to prefer float fishing, I prefer to fish on the bottom where the water is less than 15 metres. In certain areas (Chain and Amity banks), a floated bait will pick up more turtles than shark.
My biggest sharks and shovellies have all been caught on fresh large squid bottom fished. A 10/0 gamakatsu octopus is sufficiently big enough to land sharks and shovellies, up to 3 metres and yet small enough to accommodate the smaller ones. The only problem with fishing on the bottom is that you may get hit by large stingies and may miss out on a passing pelagic, but if I am out specifically for flake, then I will fish the bottom every time.
Shovellies do not have as strong a taste as shark which is another reason for fishing on the bottom.

I cannot clean sharks with a strong ammount of ammonia...I blow up in the face and get a rash....If this happens to you...then have a beer whilst cleaning the shark...Dont know why it works...must be something to do with the acid....but it solves this problem.
Mick
ha ha any excuse snelly
Ha...No i was being serious...I worked on a shark boat for 6 odd months...I can clean Gummy shark no worries but the School shark ...which carry alot more ammonia had a swelling affect on me..The skipper told me to try a beer whilst cleaning a school shark....it definatly works.....

update for todays fishing trip..........CRAP!!!!
No good mate? Any action at all? The weather was ordinary to say the least
Good reason for carrying a cold tinnie in the slurry.
You say fish, I say yes please.
yeah no good right from the start.
mate was still asleep when 20min after he should have been at mine. (i ended up at his)
house boat was already covered in boats.
weather was crap.
6500 was seised up(bail arm wouldnt open)
only one small keeper (squire)
trailer now making a strange noise. (constant tapping comming from the wheels)
how did you go captain stabbin?i saw a skin head wave at me.....was that you?
yeah mate it was me. A bit the same, couldnt fish my usual spot as there was a bay cruiser anchored up in my normal drift. Tried a bit of new ground where you saw me shhh. Boated about 6 Squire, mainly rats but managed 1 for dinner. Then to many boats came in so I went for a run to Harrys looking for birds but nothing, pulled the boat out at about 8 after a bumpy run back
good fish though...........i saw a bay cruiser anchored in the spot we used to troll small hard bodies for some really good squire....(just north of you)...good lookin boat you have.....long lecy.
I'd have thought a surf board rider would be the best bait for sharks
Only kidding, this is an interesting thread, I might give it a go myself soon. Are they more on in summer, or does season not matter ?

Some threads in the past have recommended summer and I have never questioned that, but my personal experience has shown that I have caught more in the winter months. The reason that I haven't questioned others' experiences is simply because I have done more trips in the winter months, stayed out longer (onshore summer breeze), and fished Amity and Chain more, (which is where I've had my best catches). So I'm really not sure if my better shark catches are just a matter of mathematics.
Oh! ..............and winter is the time that I use fresh squid which is my preferred bait.
