    Re: Sammy the Salmon

there are two size limits for the two threadies..... cant remember the details but

The bigger size limit applies to the fish that has lips

seriously one spicies looks like it has lips and the other doesn't.

the pics I have seen from the river look like they have lips

    cheers

Sorry mate but you are wrong about the size limits,Check out this link http://www.dpi.qld.gov.au/cps/rde/xc...2_ENA_HTML.htm

You will find that both king and blue salmon are legal at 40cm (60cm for king salmon in the Gulf of Carpentaria)

    Re: Sammy the Salmon

    Nice fish Tim,

Apart from the fact that you guys seem to catch way more Salmon (Tropical fish???) down there than up here means my opinions may be moot anway but here goes:

My experience with threadies both up in the NT and here in Townsville are that salmon are may not be bottoms feeders only.

In fact, I've been told by guides that a good way to catch them is to drift mullet or gar strips unweighted in the current especially where there is a colour change just off the tidal banks where muddied water from the bank meets clearer channel water. Or under floats near rocks on a rising tide. They love livies as other reports on this forum attest.

The only salmon I've caught in Townsville were caught in this fashion (the first). It was really funny because I said 'I'm going to catch a salmon' to my mate in the boat - he laughed at me then stopped not soon after when the first threadie hat hit the deck. It'd be interesting to hear if any of you guys catch one this way - let me know if you do.

    Cheers
